Student answer (Band 7.5)

Women hold an equal significance in the world but they have been marginalized due to patriarchy. It is often argued that the worth of women has increased over the last five decades in multiple parts of the world but gender equality is yet to be achieved. I agree with this stance because women in developed countries are stopped from getting top tier promotions in multiple government sectors. Other than this, women are also deprived of equal wages like their male colleagues. This essay discusses both these points in detail before reaching a conclusion.

To begin with the argument, gender equality still seems a distant dream because women are not given promotions to higher governmental positions. Invisible ceiling affect is regarded as the main reason behind this because women cannot progress to top posts due to their gender. For example, United States has no female chief justice to this day, which shows women are not treated on equal basis like men.

Another point which represents the sorry state of women in progressive countries is the wage system, which pays men more than women. In multiple places, women and men are working together and they are doing the same level of tasks, but women are not paid equal to men because of their gender. For instance, in Hollywood shows, lead roles are played by men and women but men get more pay as compared to women.

Concluding this discussion, Although there is a considerable work done in last fifty years to lift the status of women in thriving societies, they still suffer due to their gender in achieving top positions in state machinery and equal pays at workplaces.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the view that gender equality remains elusive. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas regarding the 'glass ceiling' in government and the gender pay gap are relevant and well-supported with examples like the US judiciary and the entertainment industry. However, the development is somewhat limited; the essay could benefit from more nuanced analysis or a broader perspective on why these issues persist. While the arguments are clear, they are slightly repetitive in their structure, which prevents the response from reaching the highest band. Overall, it is a solid, focused attempt that fully answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Another point', and 'For instance' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is slightly abrupt, and some cohesive links are a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the argument well. To improve, the student could vary the cohesive devices used to create a more natural flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'marginalized', 'patriarchy', 'gender equality', and 'state machinery'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Invisible ceiling affect' (should be 'effect') and 'equal basis like men' (should be 'on an equal basis with men'). While the range is adequate, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The student relies on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'in multiple places' and 'in multiple parts'. Expanding the range of collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Although there is a considerable work done... they still suffer'. However, there are several grammatical slips, including missing articles ('the United States', 'the last fifty years') and minor prepositional errors ('paid equal to men' instead of 'paid equally to men'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the control over complex structures is not yet fully consistent. The errors present do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and verb-adverb collocations would be beneficial.
