Student answer (Band 8.0)

The position of women has changed significantly over time, but some believe that complete gender equality has not been achieved yet. In this essay, the improvements made by governments and areas that can be improved will be discussed.

First and foremost, it can be seen that females are having greater access to education and employment compared to the past. For instance, more parents are willing to support their daughters in terms of higher education opportunities, whereas the majority of people held the stereotype that only boys needed to further study a few decades ago. This improvement of the general public's awareness in turn enables more females to be able to work in a variety of industries, such as healthcare and science. Additionally, governments have introduced laws that prevent discrimination, and that promote equal opportunities in the workplace, encouraging females to showcase their potential.

Nevertheless, it must be realized that there are still many aspects of women's welfare that are ignored, namely the gender pay gap. For example, in some developing countries, particularly in South Asia, women earn less than men for similar work, discouraging them from climbing the career ladder. In addition, females are generally underrepresented in most senior management positions. There are still a significant number of employers who assume that women cannot work as much as usual during their pregnancy and menstruation. That assumption, though, is unproven. Finally, in most families, women are still expected to take on more household responsibilities, such as domestic chores and childcare, which takes up a substantial amount of time and energy from them and therefore limits their career growth and financial independence.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that gender equality has not been achieved yet despite the improvements that have been made by governments. Regarding equal payment, promotion opportunities, and the role in households, these areas still require attention from society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your position that gender equality remains an unfulfilled goal. Your ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples such as the gender pay gap and the unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities. The essay is well-structured, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs that contrast progress with ongoing challenges, and a concise conclusion. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are slightly more detailed; for instance, while you mention South Asia, you could briefly explain how cultural norms specifically influence the pay gap there to add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First and foremost', 'Additionally', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion'. The transition between the progress made and the remaining challenges is smooth. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve further, try to vary your cohesive devices even more; for example, instead of relying on 'For instance' and 'For example', you could use phrases like 'A pertinent illustration of this is...' or 'This is evidenced by...'. Overall, the flow of information is natural and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'climbing the career ladder', 'financial independence', and 'underrepresented' are used correctly and appropriately for the context. There is a good attempt to use less common items, such as 'stereotype' and 'discrimination'. While the vocabulary is accurate, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to social issues, such as 'glass ceiling' or 'systemic barriers', to demonstrate a more flexible and nuanced command of the English language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice effectively ('are having greater access', 'have been made') and conditional-like structures to explain cause and effect. The grammar is generally accurate, and your punctuation is correct throughout. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. To reach the next level, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced relative clauses, to show greater flexibility. Currently, your control is solid, and the majority of your sentences are error-free.
