Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that women's positions have registered a huge positive change in many societies over the past five decades but these societies have not actually achieved gender equality even if they claim to. I agree with this statement although it is true that women are far better off now than they were 50 years ago, societies still have a long way to go to achieve gender equality.

In the past, men were expected to go out and work to provide for their families carrying the whole family's responsibilities on their backs while women were expected to take care of the home and their families. Women have fought long and hard over the years to change this expectation and gain more independence over the men. This has worked to great degree as more women are working now more than ever, even in jobs that were previously male-centered. Although this is true, men still hold more positions of power and are therefore responsible in giving out jobs to the public. Some men, especially older men favor their fellow men while recruiting as they still hold the old-fashioned belief that women are not capable of working and should stay home. This leads to more men in the workforce than women which reinforces the view that society is still a long way from achieving gender equality.

Womens' fight for gender equality has garnered a lot of positive results over the years that they should be proud of. Their fight has to some extent, led to the neglect of the boy-child. As more people are educated on the need for gender equality in the society, female children have started to experience favoritism in school and after school. Girls are treated more leniently compared to boys while in school, for example, in Kenya, girls have seen improvement in performance, surpassing boys and this been attributed to examiners being more lenient to girls while marking paper-based exams. This sets up girls for success while boys are left behind shifting gender equality the other way around.

In conclusion, women have seen a great deal of positive change due to their fight for gender equality but society still has not quite reached gender balance yet, as men in positions of power continue to favor other men in job recruitment and girls receive favoritism in school, leaving boys behind.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that agrees with the premise. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. The first body paragraph discusses the persistence of power imbalances in the workplace, while the second introduces an interesting, albeit slightly tangential, perspective regarding the 'boy-child' in education. While the argument about the boy-child is a valid observation, it could have been more tightly linked to the central theme of gender equality to ensure a more cohesive argument. Overall, the response is well-supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of the Kenyan education system, which adds depth to the discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In the past,' 'Although this is true,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there is some minor repetition in the use of transition words, and the connection between the second body paragraph and the overall thesis could be strengthened to ensure a smoother flow of logic. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. Phrases like 'garnered a lot of positive results,' 'male-centered,' and 'old-fashioned belief' demonstrate a good command of language. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'responsible in giving out jobs' (should be 'responsible for') and 'shifting gender equality the other way around,' which is slightly informal. However, these do not impede communication. The range of vocabulary is adequate to convey complex ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, though some grammatical slips occur, such as 'Womens' fight' (should be 'Women's fight') and 'this been attributed' (missing 'has'). Punctuation is generally handled well, though some sentences could benefit from more varied clause structures to enhance the flow. Despite these occasional errors, the grammar is accurate enough that the meaning is never obscured, and the control over complex structures is sufficient for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level.
