Student answer (Band 7.0)

Even though there have been huge improvements for women in society over the past fifty years, we're still not quite at gender equality. Women who lived through the 60s or 70s probably notice the big changes in women's lives today. But they probably also see the old familiar inequalities.

In the West, women have made big strides in education and work over the last 50 years. Women often do better than men in school and are moving into jobs and careers that used to be off-limits. They often reach top positions in companies and, in some countries, even the highest levels of politics. Successful female business owners are frequently in the media, which might make it seem like women are finally on an even playing field. But looking closer, it's clear there are still major issues. Women still face inequalities at work and women still haven’t reached the point where they earn the same as men doing similar jobs.

On top of that, they’re usually the ones handling childcare and housework too, which means working full-time women end up with a ‘double burden.’ Even though some women have made it to influential positions, those cases are more the exception than the rule, and women are still outnumbered in power roles. Plus, the way women are portrayed in the media hasn’t changed much in 50 years — they’re often shown as objects rather than successful entrepreneurs or public figures.

So, despite the real progress made, I think women from the last century would still recognize a lot when looking at the situation of women in society today.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt, maintaining a consistent position throughout that while progress has been made, true gender equality remains elusive. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, particularly the discussion of the 'double burden' and the disparity in leadership roles. However, the essay could be improved by providing more specific, concrete examples beyond general observations to further substantiate the arguments. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, reinforcing the central thesis. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, such as progress in education versus the persistence of the 'double burden.' Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'On top of that' and 'Despite the real progress made,' which help guide the reader through the argument. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear, contributing to a coherent and well-structured response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some effective collocations and phrases, such as 'made big strides,' 'off-limits,' and 'even playing field.' While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or academic vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is natural and conveys the intended meaning clearly throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammar, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentences are easy to follow. While the writing is clear, it relies heavily on standard structures. To achieve a higher band, the student could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or more advanced passive constructions. There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication in any way.
