Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this contemporary society, women now have access to many opportunities than in the past such as, in education, employment, politics, and many more. For over the past 5 decades, the position of women has improved in many parts of the globe. I largely agree with the statement that genuine gender equality has not yet been achieved.

To commence with, one major area where women have not equal rights is in education and employment area. Many women did get the same opportunities as men at workplaces, but they are traditionally dominated by men, such as medicine, engineering, lawyers' exacta. For example, women are not being placed at the higher positions as men in many different fields, which is quite inequality.

Additionally, another field is the unequal distribution of income and unpaid household responsibilities. Although many women work full time and often continue to perform a greater proportion of childhood than their male partners and also, they are not getting a penny for doing all this but still continues. For instance, a mother who works 9 to 5 may still be expected to take responsibilities for cooking, cleaning and caring for young children, while her partner has only responsibilities of work and not of house chores.

At the end, I strongly believe that though women's position has improved significantly over the past few decades, but gender equality remains unfinished goal and there are fields that should focus more on the other things rather than just giving specific positions to enhance women involvement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on education, employment, and the domestic sphere. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the mention of 'medicine, engineering, lawyers' exacta' is vague and lacks a clear explanation of why these fields remain male-dominated. The argument regarding the 'double burden' of work and household chores is a strong point, but it could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks a strong summary of the main points discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', and 'At the end', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'which is quite inequality'. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'gender equality', 'unpaid household responsibilities', and 'contemporary society'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and non-standard phrasing, such as 'exacta' (likely meant 'etcetera'), 'perform a greater proportion of childhood' (likely meant 'childcare'), and 'not getting a penny'. These errors occasionally hinder the precision of the argument. A wider range of academic collocations would be required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include 'women now have access to many opportunities than in the past' (should be 'more opportunities'), 'Many women did get the same opportunities' (should be 'do not get'), and 'gender equality remains unfinished goal' (missing article). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure often feels repetitive. The errors do not completely impede communication, but they are noticeable throughout the response.
