Student answer (Band 7.0)

The position of women has changed significantly in many societies over the past 50 years. Women now have greater access to education, healthcare, employment and political participation than in the past. However, I agree that gender equality has not yet been fully achieved because women still face discrimination and unequal opportunities in several areas.

One major change is that women have gained much better access to education and employment. In the past, women were often expected to focus mainly on household responsibilities and over families , whereas today they can pursue higher education and professional careers. More women are also working in fields that were traditionally dominated by men, such as engineering, medicine and management. In addition, women have greater legal rights and are more likely to participate in political and social activities.

Despite these improvements, complete gender equality remains difficult to achieve. Women in many workplaces still earn less than men for similar positions and may have fewer opportunities to reach senior roles. Furthermore, women often have to balance their careers with a greater share of household and childcare responsibilities. This can limit their career progression and create additional pressure. In some societies, traditional attitudes towards women continue to restrict their freedom and opportunities.

In conclusion, although the position of women has improved considerably over the last five decades, I believe that societies cannot yet claim to have achieved complete gender equality. Further changes are needed to eliminate workplace discrimination, provide equal opportunities and encourage a more balanced sharing of family responsibilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that acknowledges progress while maintaining that gender equality remains incomplete. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the discussion on workplace disparities and the 'double burden' of domestic responsibilities. The essay maintains a consistent position throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, concrete examples—such as referencing a particular policy or a specific societal trend—to further substantiate the arguments beyond general observations. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme: the first body paragraph focuses on progress, while the second focuses on remaining challenges. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Despite these improvements', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The introduction and conclusion are well-structured, providing a clear framework for the argument. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the text. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'political participation', 'professional careers', 'career progression', and 'workplace discrimination'. There is a good level of precision in the word choice, which helps convey the argument clearly. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band score. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the range is adequate to express complex ideas effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of 'although' clauses and relative clauses, which are generally accurate. Punctuation is mostly correct, though there is a minor error in the second paragraph ('over families' should likely be 'our families' or 'their families'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the grammatical control is consistent. To improve, the student could incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as inversion or more advanced conditional forms, to demonstrate greater flexibility in their writing.
