Student answer (Band 7.5)

The position of women has changed significantly in many societies over the past 50 years. Women now have greater access to education, employment and political participation than in the past. However, I largely agree that these changes have not yet resulted in complete gender equality.

One major area in which women have made substantial progress is education and employment. In many countries, women now attend universities and enter professions that were traditionally dominated by men, such as medicine, law and engineering. They are also increasingly represented in senior positions in business and government. Furthermore, laws in many societies have been introduced to protect women from discrimination and to promote equal opportunities. These developments demonstrate that the social and economic position of women has improved considerably.

Despite this progress, significant inequalities remain. One important issue is the gender pay gap. Women in many countries continue to earn less than men, particularly in senior or highly paid occupations.Women are also more likely to take career breaks or work part-time because of childcare and other family responsibilities. As a result, they may have fewer opportunities for promotion and financial independence. This suggests that legal equality does not always translate into equality in everyday life.

Another problem is that traditional attitudes towards gender roles remain widespread. Women are often expected to take greater responsibility for housework, childcare and caring for elderly relatives, even when they have full-time jobs. In addition, women in some societies still face restrictions on their freedom, education or participation in public life. Violence and harassment against women are also serious problems in many parts of the world. Therefore, although women's rights have improved, social attitudes and unequal responsibilities continue to prevent genuine equality.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that the position of women has improved greatly over the last five decades, but I do not believe that gender equality has been fully achieved. Legal and educationalprogress has been considerable, yet economic inequality, unequal family responsibilities and traditional attitudes continue to create disadvantages for women. True equality will require not only further legal reforms but also a lasting change in social attitudes.
