Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is true that the role of women in many countries has undergone significant changes over the last five decades. However, I largely agree that true gender equality has not yet been achieved in most of these societies.

One area where progress has clearly been made is education and employment. Fifty years ago, in many countries, women were expected to stay at home and had limited access to higher education or professional careers. Today, this has changed dramatically, and women now attend universities and work in fields that were once considered exclusively male, such as medicine, law, and engineering. For example, in the UK, women now make up the majority of university graduates. This shows that opportunities for women have genuinely expanded.

Despite this progress, however, full equality remains out of reach in several important respects. Women are still paid less than men for doing the same job in many industries, and they remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions and government. For instance, only a small percentage of chief executives of major companies worldwide are women, despite women making up roughly half of the workforce. In addition, women continue to bear a disproportionate share of household and childcare responsibilities, even when they work full-time, which limits their career progression. These issues suggest that while attitudes have shifted, structural and cultural barriers still prevent women from having the same opportunities as men.

In conclusion, although women's position in society has improved considerably in areas such as education and employment, persistent gaps in pay, leadership representation, and domestic responsibilities mean that genuine gender equality has not yet been reached.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with the first body paragraph acknowledging progress in education and employment, and the second paragraph providing specific, relevant examples of ongoing inequality, such as the gender pay gap and the underrepresentation of women in leadership. The arguments are logical and directly support your thesis. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points without introducing new information. The response is balanced and demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the acknowledgement of progress and the discussion of remaining barriers is smooth, facilitated by the use of cohesive devices like 'Despite this progress, however' and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct arguments. The referencing is clear, and the flow of the argument is natural throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the overall structure is highly coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases such as 'undergone significant changes', 'disproportionate share', and 'structural and cultural barriers' show a good command of topic-specific language. The vocabulary is used with precision and contributes to the clarity of your arguments. While the language is accurate and natural, it stops just short of the 'sophisticated' or 'uncommon' lexical items that would characterize a band 9 response. Nevertheless, the lexical resource is more than sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'even when they work full-time, which limits their career progression'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and syntax is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent, and the use of varied sentence structures makes the essay engaging to read. The accuracy is consistent throughout, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
