Student answer (Band 6.5)

The world today has changed drastically over the last half century, including the role women play in modern society.

Although women have experienced empowerment recently, gender inequality still exists in many parts of the world today.

Historically, many societies had traditional views on the role of a woman. These roles included things such as being a wife and mother and completing house duties whilst their husband worked. Moreover, in many societies, women were not permitted to vote.

However, as time passed, many societies started to change and so too did the position of women. This is exemplified by more women working various jobs and also being allowed to vote.

Despite these aforementioned changes, still today in many societies women are not paid as well as men even with equal employment legislation which is a sign of gender inequality. Many women dispute they are discriminated against for management positions or promotion for example due to pregnancy. Additionally, it could be argued that many women face inequality in terms of job selection as they may be overlooked by males especially if a woman is pregnant.

Notably, women have not experienced the same empowerment across all societies. In many societies such as in many third world countries, a woman's position is still viewed as traditional.

To conclude, although the position of women has changed drastically over the past 50 years in many societies, these societies have still not fully achieved the goal of gender equality. We cannot consider gender equality to have been achieved when many societies still experience gender inequality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task directly, presenting a clear position that despite progress over the past 50 years, full gender equality has not been achieved. The essay outlines historical contexts and contemporary issues such as the gender pay gap, pregnancy discrimination, and global disparities. Ideas are relevant and supported, although some points, such as the discussion on third-world countries, remain slightly generalised and could have been extended with more specific examples. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements for Task Achievement at a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level, successfully demonstrating a well-supported argument throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphs are used appropriately to separate historical background from modern-day arguments and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, seen through phrases like 'Historically', 'However', and 'Despite these aforementioned changes'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reuse of 'In many societies'. Paragraphing is sound, and the reader can easily follow the progression of ideas, aligning with the Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the academic task, including terms like 'empowerment', 'gender inequality', 'legislation', and 'discriminated'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional word choice and collocation issues appear, such as 'completing house duties' instead of 'household chores' or 'housework', and 'paid as well as' instead of 'remunerated equally'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student demonstrates good control of basic grammar and successfully uses complex structures such as concessive clauses ('Although women have experienced empowerment recently...') and conditional elements. There are some minor grammatical awkwardness and punctuation slips, such as missing commas after introductory phrases ('still today in many societies'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound. This corresponds to a solid Band 6.5.
