IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The position of women has changed a great deal in many societies over the past 50 years. But these societies cannot claim to have achieved gender equality
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I believe that women has changed many societies and they should be given their rights but I am completely disagree with the statement of gender equality. The main reason to disagree this is that every person has its own reponsibility.
I think both men and women are respectful but they are different from each other, give them the same respect but not the same position. Because in this world different profession demands different abilities even if we only talk about one gender, male, they are not same personalities. Let take an example of bulding a house, the architechure designs the structure of house because this is his prefession the construction workers cannot do this as they don't know how to design similar as architecture only designs not construct the building.
Similarly if we ask women to collect garbage instead of men, is this right? No this is not because they shouldn't.
So the conclusion is that Women did great in the past and still doing alot for society development. They should be given that respect which they deserve but gender equality is a different.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it contains only 184 words. Consequently, this significantly limits the development of ideas and results in an under-length penalty under Task Achievement. While the student attempts to address the prompt by expressing a clear position regarding gender equality and offering examples (such as architecture and garbage collection), the ideas remain extremely underdeveloped and simplistic. The reasoning jumps abruptly between points without adequate elaboration, leading to a restricted and partial treatment of the task. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their arguments with sustained, detailed explanations and sufficient examples to meet the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text lacks clear overall progression and logical structure, placing it at band 5. Paragraphing is highly erratic and ineffective, with several very short, single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the flow of ideas (e.g., 'Similarly if we ask women to collect garbage instead of men...'). Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, and referencing is sometimes confusing, such as the abrupt shift to discussing male personalities and architecture without a smooth transition. While the text has a general drift, the mechanical organisation and lack of appropriate structural links impede the reader's ability to follow a coherent line of argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted in range, which limits the student's ability to discuss a complex social topic. Words like 'respect', 'position', and 'different' are recycled frequently throughout the response. There are also notable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'architechure' instead of architecture, 'prefession' instead of profession, and awkward phrasing like 'complete disagree' instead of completely disagree. While the language used is sufficient to convey a very basic meaning, the lack of flexibility and precision, alongside frequent word-choice errors, aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic structures. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. For example, the opening sentence contains a subject-verb agreement error ('women has changed') and an incorrect adjective/adverb collocation ('I am completely disagree'). Other structural issues appear in sentences like 'give them the same respect but not the same position' and 'gender equality is a different'. These persistent errors and the lack of a varied, accurate grammatical range place the response firmly in Band 5.
