Student answer (Band 5.5)

Even though the condition of women has altered a great deal in various socities over past five decades, gender equality is yet to be achieved here. I completely agree as female are still disregarded in several countries and societies claiming they are not capable enough to hold that position. Similarly, the patriarchy and dominating mindset of the people is also holding us from achieveing gender equality.

In the past, women were not given any opportuinities to show-case their capability, which resulted in inequality between two genders. Similarly, female are considered mentally as well as physically weak to grab opportunities in a large platform. Although our society has progessed a lot in the past 50 years, mindset of people living here hasn't changed a bit. For example, if we observe many people in our locality, we will find them regarding men as superior and someone who they have to obey. This illitrate mindset is stopping our society from achieving equality.

In addition, patriarchy is deeply rooted in our society. People still believe that men are superior to women, which hinders parity in the community. This mindset is not just in male but also in female, who have become the victim of it. For instance, if people in countries like Nepal are asked about the head of the family or someone who is the superior one, then almost 50% of the time you will hear their answer as male. Unless and until such belief is eradicated from all the societies, it is still difficult to attain gender equality even in this 21st century.

In conclusion, people should view both gender as equal and provide equal opportunities in every sector. Then only, it is possible to achieve gender equality and improve the position of women in coming decades.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the statement that gender equality has not yet been achieved. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The student develops relevant ideas by discussing historical context, societal mindsets, and patriarchal structures, supporting these points with a specific example regarding practices in Nepal. While some ideas could be slightly more deeply extended or nuanced to reach higher band levels, the main arguments are well-selected and directly answer the task question. The introduction and body paragraphs successfully present a coherent viewpoint on the changing yet unequal position of women in modern societies. Therefore, this performance aligns well with the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as historical perceptions and patriarchal mindsets. Cohesive devices such as 'In the past', 'Similarly', 'Although', 'In addition', and 'For instance' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor cohesion faults appear, such as agreement issues ('female are considered'). Overall, the logical progression is apparent, making the text easy to follow and satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'eradicated', 'patriarchy', 'dominating mindset', and 'parity'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('socities', 'opportuinities', 'progessed', 'illitrate') and some awkward word choices or grammatical forms (e.g., 'female are', 'both gender'). These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To reach a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in word formation and reduce spelling inaccuracies. This performance comfortably fits into Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses using words like 'Although', 'Even though', and 'Unless'. However, there is a recurring presence of grammatical errors and inaccuracies, particularly with pluralisation and subject-verb agreement, such as 'female are still disregarded' and 'both gender'. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. While these errors rarely impede communication and the complex structures show an attempt at variety, the frequency of basic mechanical errors prevents the grammar score from rising into the higher bands. The appropriate descriptor band for this level of accuracy and range is Band 6.0.
