Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate regarding the position of women in a number of societies as over the past 50 years, the role of women in these societies have changed to a greater extent. Yet these societies are not able to claim that they have secured gender equality. In my opinion, this concept is not true as many societies have achieved gender equality.

Modern societies have achieved gender equality through education. In the past time, people were uneducated. They were uncapable of giving rights to women. But as the science has progressed over the time, people got education. That developed a sense of responsibility allowing the people to give equal rights to their women. As a result, women started to get education in the schools, colleges, and universities along with the men. They are now doing jobs and leading various sectors such as health sciences, agriculture, arts, and music. Furthermore, they are leading governments in various parts of the world. They are now solving financial matters.

Latest technology has also played a great role in uplifting gender equality. As the internet has reached every corner of the world, people are now connected with each other through various social media platforms such as youtube, facebook, instagram, twitter, and whatsapp. People now praise such societies on social media which provide an adequate support to women. On the other hand, societies where women face challenges in securing freedom are now discouraged through these social media platforms. As a consequence, any illegal activity against women is rapidly reported and government authorities and non-government organizations working for the welfare of women take an appropriate action against such activity.

In the conclusion, it is stated that the role of women has changed over the time because of education and advancement in technologies. The modern societies can now claim that they have achieved gender equality.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear position against the premise that gender equality has not been achieved. The writer attempts to develop ideas concerning education and technology as driving forces behind gender equality. However, the development of these ideas remains somewhat superficial and lacks specific real-world examples or deeper elaboration. For instance, stating that "science has progressed over the time, people got education" is a very broad generalisation without specific context. While all parts of the task are addressed, the arguments would benefit from more concrete illustrations rather than repetitive assertions. Consequently, the response aligns best with a Band 6, where relevant ideas are presented but remain somewhat under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing distinct points, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate ideas about education and technology. Cohesive devices are employed, such as "Furthermore," "On the other hand," and "As a consequence," though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within paragraphs occasionally falters due to abrupt shifts in ideas. For example, moving from internet connectivity directly to government authorities taking action creates a slight leap in reasoning. Overall, the organisational structure is logical enough to meet the criteria for a Band 6.5, leaning towards a clear logical progression with some minor mechanical usage of cohesive features.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, touching upon relevant concepts like "gender equality," "responsibility," and "advancement in technologies." However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as "In the past time" instead of "In the past," "uncapable" instead of "incapable," and "taking an appropriate action" instead of "taking appropriate action." While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, these inaccuracies and occasional unnatural phrasings prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning, which places this response firmly at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage. For instance, the opening sentence contains a serious agreement error: "the role of women in these societies have changed," where 'have' should be 'has'. Other notable errors include "people got education" (missing article), "as the science has progressed" (incorrect article usage), and "over the time" (unnecessary article). Although these errors do not severely impede overall communication, their frequency across the text prevents the grammar score from achieving a Band 6. The control over grammar aligns closely with Band 5.5 descriptors due to the regular occurrence of basic structural and agreement errors.
