Student answer (Band 8.0)
It is undeniably true that the socio-economic and political status of women has undergone a profound transformation over the last half-century. However, despite these remarkable strides, I completely agree with the assertion that modern societies fall short of achieving genuine gender equality, as systemic disparities continue to restrict women's advancement.
On the one hand, the past fifty years have witnessed unprecedented progress regarding women's rights and opportunities. Globally, legal and social frameworks have evolved to grant women greater access to higher education and the workforce. Today, women actively participate in fields historically dominated by men, including governance, engineering, and corporate leadership. Furthermore, legislative changes in many countries have sought to enforce equal voting rights, reproductive freedoms, and protection against discrimination. This historic shift has dismantled many overt barriers, fundamentally altering the traditional domestic role expected of women in previous generations.
Nevertheless, beneath the surface of this progress, structural inequities remain deeply entrenched, proving that true parity is yet to be realized. The most glaring evidence of this is the persistent gender pay gap, where women are frequently compensated less than men for identical work. Additionally, the corporate world still features an invisible barrier known as the "glass ceiling." While entry-level corporate positions are relatively balanced, executive boardrooms and political offices remain overwhelmingly male-dominated. This underrepresentation is often exacerbated by the fact that women continue to bear a disproportionate share of unpaid domestic labor and childcare duties—a phenomenon frequently referred to as the "second shift"—which restricts their professional trajectory.
In conclusion, while societies have made monumental leaps forward in improving the societal standing of women, labeling the current climate as one of complete gender equality is premature. True equality will only be achieved when deep-rooted systemic biases, unequal domestic burdens, and structural professional barriers are fully eradicated.

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the evolution of women's roles over the past 50 years and clearly taking a strong stance in complete agreement with the statement. The position is well maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are thoroughly developed and supported with relevant examples, such as reference to access to higher education, the gender pay gap, the "glass ceiling," and the "second shift." This performance comfortably matches the Band 8 descriptor, as it covers all parts of the task well with fully developed and well-supported ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme—the first body paragraph examines historical progress, while the second explores ongoing structural inequities. Cohesive devices are managed well and used naturally, as seen with transitional phrases like "On the one hand," "Nevertheless," and "In conclusion." Referencing and substitution are clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of ideas without any disruption. The logical flow and effective paragraph structuring easily align with a Band 8 standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion on gender equality. Less common and sophisticated lexical items are used naturally and with a high degree of precision, such as "socio-economic," "unprecedented progress," "entrenched," "persistent gender pay gap," and "disproportionate share." Word choice and collocations are used skillfully throughout the response. There are no noticeable inaccuracies or spelling errors, showcasing a very strong control of vocabulary that fully satisfies the criteria for Band 8.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The essay exhibits a wide range of complex grammatical structures used with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the writer demonstrates excellent control over subordinate clauses, relative clauses, and participial phrases (e.g., "While entry-level corporate positions are relatively balanced, executive boardrooms... remain overwhelmingly male-dominated"). Punctuation is accurate, and syntax is handled with sophistication. Only very occasional, minor slips could be conceived, but the overall grammatical execution easily meets the high standards of Band 8.
