Student answer (Band 7.0)
I totally agree with the idea that the position of women has changed a great deal in many societies over the past 50 years yet these societies cannot claim they have achieved gender equality. The reasons for my answer are mentioned below.
Firstly, gender inequality still exists in many societies, and women are still denied some of their basic rights. One important example is the right to education. Women in some societies are still denied access to schools, colleges and universities, which limits their ability to obtain professional qualifications and become financially independent. Consequently, they may have fewer opportunities to participate equally in the workforce and make important decisions about their own lives. Education plays a significant role in helping individuals develop knowledge, skills and confidence, and without it, women may find it difficult to build successful careers or support themselves financially. In addition, a lack of education can make women more dependent on their families, particularly in societies where traditional gender roles are common. For example, if a girl is prevented from attending school, she may have limited career choices when she becomes an adult and may have to rely on her family for financial support. This can also affect future generations because educated mothers are generally better able to support their children's education and development. Therefore, although the position of women has improved considerably in many parts of the world over the past 50 years, the continued denial of educational opportunities demonstrates that complete gender equality has not yet been achieved.
Secondly, women still face harassment and discrimination in many societies. They may experience inappropriate behaviour in workplaces, public places and even in their own homes. Such treatment can make women feel unsafe and can negatively affect their confidence and emotional well-being. For example, some women may avoid certain jobs or public places because they fear harassment or discrimination. In addition, women who report such incidents may not always receive proper support from the relevant authorities. As a result, many women continue to face barriers that men do not experience to the same extent. Therefore, gender equality has not yet been fully achieved.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position on gender equality and presenting relevant ideas. The arguments are extended and supported, particularly regarding education and workplace discrimination. For example, the explanation of how education affects financial independence and future generations is well-developed. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in the first body paragraph, where broad claims are made about women being denied access to education across entire societies. To reach a higher level, the ideas could be supported with more specific, nuanced examples rather than repetitive explanations of similar points, ensuring that every main idea is fully explored without minor redundancies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, with a distinct introduction, two well-developed body paragraphs, and an appropriate opening statement. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as "Firstly," "Consequently," "In addition," and "Secondly." However, there is a slight tendency towards mechanical referencing and transitional phrasing, as seen in the formulaic signposting at the beginning of each paragraph. To achieve a higher standard, the transitions could be integrated more fluidly without relying heavily on standard sequence markers, making the flow of arguments appear more natural and less structured by rigid templates.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. Words and phrases such as "financially independent," "professional qualifications," "emotional well-being," and "relevant authorities" show an awareness of appropriate academic style and collocation. However, the range is somewhat limited for higher bands, and there are occasional signs of repetitiveness, such as the frequent reuse of terms like "societies," "education," and "women." To move further up, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items and synonyms with greater flexibility, avoiding minor stylistic gaps and demonstrating a more sophisticated control over word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response features a good variety of complex structures and a high frequency of error-free sentences, demonstrating solid control of grammar and punctuation. The writer successfully constructs long, multi-clause sentences, such as conditional structures and relative clauses ("if a girl is prevented from attending school, she may have limited career choices"). Grammar and punctuation are generally well managed, with appropriate use of commas to separate clauses. A few minor limitations persist in terms of structural variety, and occasional minor slips occur, but these do not impede communication. To attain an even higher band, the writer could incorporate a wider range of sophisticated syntactic structures, such as inversion or participle clauses, while maintaining total accuracy across all sentence forms.
