Student answer (Band 6.5)

Women play very significant role in building up the community. Their position also evolved in many civilizations over past 50 years while there is a constant argue that gender inequality also exist in these societies. I largely agree with this statement because despite clear progress in work and education, major inequalities still exist in wages, leadership roles and domestic life.

On the one hand, it is true that women's position has changed immensely compared to 50 years ago. Today, young women have equal access to university education, and can choose careers in fields like medicine, engineering and business that were previously dominated by men. For example, in many modern workplaces, it is now normal to see women working alongside men as doctors, lawyers and office managers. This progress proves that societal attitudes towards women has become much more open.

On the other hand, there are several reason that inequalities still present in the societies. First, the gender gap pay remains a serious problem, means women are often paid less than men doing the exact same job. Additionally, very few women hold high level leadership positions in big companies or politics. For example, only a small percentage of Fortune 500 companies are led by female executives (CEO). Second women still carry double burden because they are usually expected to handle most of the housework and childcare, even when they work full-time jobs.

In conclusion, although the status of women has advanced remarkably over the last half century. I agree that no society can claim to have full gender equality. Until women receive equal pay , equal representation in top leadership, and shared responsibilities at home, complete equality remains unachieved.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position throughout and supporting it with relevant arguments. You have covered key areas such as education, employment, the gender pay gap, leadership roles, and domestic responsibilities. Your stance is easy to follow, and you maintain a consistent line of argument from the introduction to the conclusion. However, to reach a higher band, some of your ideas could be extended further with deeper analysis or more detailed explanations rather than relying on brief examples. For instance, the point regarding the double burden at home is introduced effectively but would benefit from further elaboration on how this specifically hinders professional advancement. Overall, your ideas are well-selected and directly relevant to the topic of gender equality.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas throughout. You make use of standard cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument—the first exploring progress and the second highlighting ongoing inequalities. Nevertheless, some elements of cohesion feel slightly mechanical, and referencing is occasionally less fluid than it could be. For example, transitional phrases between sentences within the body paragraphs could be varied more naturally to create smoother links. To achieve a higher level, you should aim for more sophisticated and unobtrusive management of cohesive devices, ensuring that connections between sentences are always seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'dominance', 'executives', and 'responsibilities'. Your choice of words allows you to communicate your thoughts clearly, and terms like 'gender inequality', 'university education', and 'leadership positions' show a good grasp of topic-specific language. There are, however, some lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'argue' instead of 'argument', 'gap pay' instead of 'pay gap', and missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'there are several reason that inequalities still present'. While these slips do not impede communication, improving your precision with word choice, word forms, and collocations will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various subordinate clauses and compound forms to express your ideas. Sentences such as 'Today, young women have equal access to university education, and can choose careers in fields like medicine... that were previously dominated by men' show your ability to handle complex syntax. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including missing articles ('Second women still carry double burden'), punctuation issues like sentence fragments ('although the status of women has advanced remarkably over the last half century. I agree...'), and minor subject-verb agreement slips ('attitudes... has'). These errors persist throughout the response, though they rarely impede communication. To move up to the next band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences when using complex structures and tighten your control over punctuation and articles.
