Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over the past 5 decades, the role of women have changed a lot throughout different communities, cultures, and socities, all over the world. However, I strongly agree that the same cannot be said in terms of achieving gender equality in these societies. Women in these societies still suffer from less oppurtunity, and pay gap.

Women are provided less oppurtunity to work as an individual in authoritarian bodies. For instance, in Bangladesh, to act as a part of the government body, one has to be elected as a member of the parliament. It is really shocking that even in these times, there are only 50 reserved seat for women candidates out of 350 seats for all genders. This shows that women are deprived of the oppurtunity despite being half of the total population of a country.

Pay gap is another aspect where women are treated poorly than that of a man. For example, the male cricket team players in Bangladesh receive significantly larger salary than the female team. However, in terms of achievement, the male cricket team continues to dissapoint the country with countless losses at the international competitive levels. The female cricket team, despite the pay gap and less oppurtunity, has proven themselves capable of achieving higher success in international competitions, winning some of the major trophies for the country.

In conclusion, women are still suffering from the gender equality issue in these societies regardless of the shift of their position throughout the years. Less oppurtunities, and unequal pay are still one of the driving factors for this crisis.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on gender equality and supporting it with relevant ideas throughout. The writer successfully introduces two main areas of discussion: political representation and pay gaps. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the example of the Bangladeshi parliament provides a specific context, the discussion surrounding the cricket teams could be extended further to fully explore the nuances of societal progression beyond sports. The response demonstrates the solid characteristics of the relevant band by covering the prompt adequately, yet shows elements of higher development through distinct central topics in each body paragraph, striking a balance between a standard approach and well-supported argumentation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct central focus, such as political opportunity in the first body paragraph and wage disparities in the second. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'For instance,' 'However,' and 'In conclusion,' though some referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument. To move into higher bands, the flow between sentences could be made smoother with more varied and subtle cohesive links, reducing reliance on standard transitional phrases while maintaining the clear structural framework already established.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'gender equality,' 'authoritarian bodies,' 'parliament,' and 'wage gap.' There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect limitations in precision, such as 'socities' instead of 'societies,' 'oppurtunity' instead of 'opportunity,' and 'dissapoint' instead of 'disappoint.' Furthermore, phrases like 'treated poorly than that of a man' demonstrate minor collocation inaccuracies. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, successfully attempting less common items while struggling slightly with correct spelling and precise lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as concessive clauses ('Despite the pay gap and less oppurtunity...') and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably a subject-verb agreement error in the opening sentence ('the role of women have changed' instead of 'has changed') and occasional article omissions. However, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning of the sentences. The punctuation is generally sound, and the writer demonstrates good control over basic sentence construction while attempting more complex arrangements, placing the grammatical range securely within the expected criteria.
