Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the last fifty-years, in many different societies the position of women has been altered in a great way. However, these societies can not argue about achieving gender equality. From my perspective, I disagree with this arguement because I believe that now developed countries have educated their individuals and have adopted gender equality in their communities but under-developed countries lacks in this matter.

On the one hand, the developed countries emphasize on their individuals education in which humanity subjects are also taught. One of its main idea is to give every human equal rights of living regardless of their gender. Nowadays, women are allowed to participate in politics and can become a prime minister. For example, Italy prime minister is a women and when women becomes a prime minister then more importance is given on the women education and their living rights. Ultimately, Italy can claim to achieve gender equality.

On the other hand, under-developed countries lacks in modern education and their illiteracy rate is also high. Due to this reason, they can not educate their inhabitants about bringing gender equality in their communities. In such countries, women are also not allowed to become a higher authority officer. However, their women are adopting western culture. Co-education is used in such countries universties and women try to stand at equal level of mens. But these societies still can not claim to achieve gender equality in their societies. For instance, Pakistan women have adopted almost 60% to 70% of western culture, co-education systems, participation in extra curricular activities like sports however gender quality is still missing in Pakistan.

In conclusion, over the last fifty-years, many societies of well-developed have achieved gender equality but under-developed countries are still struggling in this matter.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether gender equality has been achieved, contrasting developed and under-developed countries. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on Italy is quite brief and relies on a simplistic generalization that having a female prime minister equals full gender equality. Similarly, the points regarding Pakistan and under-developed nations tend to generalize western cultural adoption without deep elaboration. While the main stance is clear throughout and relevant ideas are present, extending the supporting examples with more depth and nuance would push the response further toward a more comprehensive exploration of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the opposing views cleanly into distinct paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical, and referencing is occasionally not entirely clear, such as how certain pronouns and ideas link across sentences. While it successfully meets the lower band requirements, achieving the next level would require a more seamless and flexible integration of cohesive ties without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'under-developed', 'illiteracy rate', and 'extra-curricular activities'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms. Examples include 'arguement' (spelling), 'humanity subjects' instead of humanities, 'Italy prime minister' instead of Italy's prime minister, 'higher authority officer', and 'quality' instead of equality. These errors and awkward collocations reflect a limited range and occasional awkwardness, though they do not seriously impede overall communication. To improve, the writer needs to refine word choice and ensure correct morphological forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('when women becomes a prime minister', 'women try to stand at equal level of mens'), subject-verb agreement issues ('under-developed countries lacks'), and punctuation slips. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally understandable and communication is rarely impeded. The presence of these persistent minor errors places the response securely in this category. To progress to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater control over complex structures, ensuring error-free execution of pluralization, articles, and subject-verb agreement.
