Student answer (Band 6.0)

The role of the women in society has improved significantly over the fifty years. However, the woman enjoy much more freedom and success than in the past, I agree that gender equality in societies have not yet achieved.

On the one hand, serious inequalities still exist in both the workplace and the home. The gender pay gap remains a major issues worldwide. In many companies women are still pad less than the men for doing the exact same job. Men still hold the vast majority of top leadership positions in large corporations and governments. For instance, women in our society are usually expected to take care of most of the housework and children, even when they are full time. This double burden make hard for women to compete equally with men.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that women have make huge progress in many areas of life. Fifty years ago, access to higher education and professional career was limited to women. Today, females students outnumber male students in universities and women work in every sector, including science, politics and business. Furthermore, the law has been introduced in most countries to protect women against discrimination at work and give them the right to vote. These changes have given the women more strength, independence and power in modern society.

In conclusion, although the roles of women has improved significantly over the past fifty years, societies cannot yet claim the gender equality. Until the societies remove the discrimination at work and pay the men and women equally, true gender equality will not be achieved.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on gender equality and supporting it with relevant ideas throughout the essay. The writer successfully covers both sides of the issue, discussing ongoing workplace and domestic inequalities in the second paragraph before acknowledging the significant progress women have made in education and the law in the third paragraph. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the mention that 'women in our society are usually expected to take care of most of the housework' is not fully extended with deeper context or a more precise illustration. The main position is maintained consistently from the introduction through to the conclusion, showing a solid command of the task requirements while leaving room for deeper elaboration to reach the next level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout the text. The essay is divided into appropriate paragraphs, featuring a distinct introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical rather than entirely natural, and referencing or linking is occasionally awkward, such as transitioning between the broader social context and personal examples. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the management of internal cohesive ties requires smoother integration to achieve full flexibility.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'corporations', 'discrimination', and 'independence'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, article usage, and collocation that prevent a higher score, such as 'The role of the women' instead of 'The role of women', 'the woman enjoy' instead of 'women enjoy', and 'pad less' instead of 'paid less'. Words like 'make' are also incorrectly used in the past participle form ('have make huge progress'). While these lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of precision in word choice and spelling that keeps the lexical range restricted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly concerning subject-verb agreement and plurals, such as 'gender equality in societies have not yet achieved', 'major issues' instead of 'major issue', and 'This double burden make hard'. Punctuation and articles are also handled inconsistently, exemplified by 'access to higher education and professional career was limited to women' and 'claim the gender equality'. These errors occur regularly alongside error-free sentences, but they rarely impede communication, reflecting a control typical of this level of structural accuracy.
