Student answer (Band 5.5)

Women's independence has brought marvellous changes in many societies over the past 50 years. Nevertheless, the issue of gender equality is still in question, as in various societies and cultures, women are still fighting for their rights. From my perspective, most of the societies are still stuck to their cultural and superstitious norms that women should not be given much priority as compared to men.

In this contemporary world, women are standing side by side with men in every field. Moreover, their brilliant ideas and theories in the field of science has helped us develop multiple useful things. Societies are still bound to their cultural traditions that women should stay home and their sole responsibility is to serve their family. Various households in villages still have a mindset that women have no right to get educated and they are miserable souls, who should be kept inside the house. There are multiple hurdles in their life, either it is social or professional. For instance, I am a veterinarian and i have seen various farmers prefering men over women, because they have a notion that women are incapable to do something. Even if you have years of experience, you will face critisim, just due to some misogynist males.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You take a clear position that gender equality has not been achieved, and the examples about women’s education, domestic expectations and your experience as a veterinarian are relevant to the question. However, the response addresses the issue only partially: it focuses mainly on barriers faced by women and gives little consideration to how their position has changed over the past 50 years. Several claims, such as women standing “side by side with men in every field,” are asserted rather than supported, and the final “Some societies” leaves the argument unfinished. The response is 200 words, 50 words below the required minimum; this limits the space available to develop reasons and examples. To strengthen the response, explain the extent of change, support your claims, and complete the essay with a conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The opening establishes your view, and the next paragraph groups related points about women’s opportunities and continuing discrimination. Linking expressions such as “Nevertheless,” “Moreover” and “For instance” help show contrast and introduce an example. However, the essay has no clear overall progression beyond this collection of points: the discussion moves from scientific contributions to traditional roles, then to your professional experience, without explaining how each point advances the argument. The ending, “Some societies,” is incomplete and provides no conclusion. Develop a simple structure with an introduction, focused body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Use references and transitions to make the relationship between each example and your central position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “gender equality,” “cultural traditions,” “professional,” “misogynist” and “incapable.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common expressions show an effort to be precise. At times, however, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or overly dramatic: “stuck to their cultural and superstitious norms” and “miserable souls” are not natural or suitably measured for an academic essay. There are also spelling errors, including “prefering” and “critisim.” Aim for precise, neutral phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, describe specific discriminatory attitudes rather than labelling people or groups broadly; this will make your argument more credible and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrastive opening and a conditional structure in “Even if you have years of experience, you will face criticism.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, punctuation and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “their brilliant ideas and theories … has helped” should use a plural verb, and “i” should be capitalised. The sentence beginning “For instance, I am a veterinarian” also shifts from a personal example to “you,” making the reference less consistent. The final fragment, “Some societies,” is incomplete. Review subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, and proofread for capitalisation. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence forms clearer.
