Student answer (Band 8.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of waiter/waitress that was advertised in the local newspaper. I am very interested in this opportunity and believe that I have the skills needed for the job.

At present, I am a college student studying for a Bachelor's degree in Computer Applications. Alongside my studies, I am looking for a part-time job where I can develop my communication and customer service skills while earning some extra income.

I believe I am suitable for this position because I am friendly, hardworking, and able to work well under pressure. I enjoy meeting new people and have good teamwork and problem-solving skills. I am also a quick learner and can adapt easily to new responsibilities.

I would be happy to attend an interview at your convenience. I am available on weekdays after 4:00 p.m. and at any time during weekends. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Rohan Prajapati

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your current status as a college student, describe your suitability by highlighting relevant soft skills like teamwork and problem-solving, and provide specific availability for an interview. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. There are no omissions, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the purpose of the letter to your background, your suitability, and finally the interview request. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'At present', 'Alongside my studies', and 'I would be happy to' to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The layout follows standard formal letter conventions, including a clear salutation and sign-off, which enhances the overall readability and flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal application. Phrases like 'at your convenience', 'adapt easily to new responsibilities', and 'Bachelor's degree' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or precise professional terminology related to the hospitality industry, such as 'fast-paced environment' or 'customer-facing role', to show a more flexible and nuanced command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The grammar is highly accurate throughout the text. You use a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences such as 'I am looking for a part-time job where I can develop my communication and customer service skills'. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The control over verb tenses and modal verbs is consistent. The writing is clear, professional, and error-free, which reflects a high level of grammatical competence.
