IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I would like to express my interest in your job position for a waitress. My name is Hadia Amjad and i have done Bachelors in Communication and skills. Currently, i am seeking modest job positions where i can showcase my expertise in handeling multi task work. Previously, i had worked with pizza hut and kfc as a waitress and on cash counter respectively.
I would like to highlight my skills in communication as i can speak fluently in 4 languages including English, Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto. Furthermore i can multitask and can handle workload during rush hours and peak times. I would further like to highlight that my degree helps me in out selling the menu to the customers and have been successful so far.
I would be available for interview in the upcoming week during work hours from 10am till 8pm. I would like to clarify that I would not be available in this week as I am out of city at the moment. I am sharing my resume and personal details in the document.
Looking forward to a positive response.
Thank you,
Kind Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your current status, provide relevant work experience to demonstrate suitability, and specify your availability for an interview. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To improve, you could expand slightly on how your specific communication skills or previous experience at Pizza Hut and KFC would benefit this particular restaurant, rather than just listing them. Overall, the ideas are relevant and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your background, skills, and availability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In addition', though the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your work experience and your language skills is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases would help improve the logical progression of your ideas and elevate the overall coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'showcase my expertise', 'multitask', and 'rush hours'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'handeling' (handling) and 'out selling' (upselling). Additionally, the phrase 'modest job positions' is slightly unnatural in this context. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise professional terminology and ensure correct spelling of common business-related terms. Your ability to communicate your skills is clear, but more sophisticated vocabulary would enhance the professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and article usage (e.g., 'done Bachelors'). There are also minor punctuation issues, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent capitalization and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
