Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: current activities, suitability for the role, and interview availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For example, while you mention your experience at your uncle's restaurant, it is described in a very brief manner. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on the specific skills gained during that experience, such as customer service, handling payments, or managing busy periods. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application, although the structure is slightly informal due to the lack of proper paragraphing and formal letter conventions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter lacks a clear structure. It is presented as a single block of text rather than using standard paragraphing (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion). While the ideas follow a logical sequence, the use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat mechanical. For instance, the transition 'however' is used incorrectly at the start of the second paragraph, as it does not contrast with the previous sentence. Improving the use of linking words and separating your ideas into distinct paragraphs would significantly enhance the flow and readability of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'do this job' and 'good idea of'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'restaurant chain' (which implies a large franchise rather than a single establishment) and 'addition in it'. To improve, you should aim to use more specific professional terminology related to the hospitality industry and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding punctuation and capitalization. You consistently fail to capitalize 'I' and the start of sentences, which is a significant issue in formal writing. There are also errors in sentence structure, such as run-on sentences and missing articles (e.g., 'apply for waiter job'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of control over basic grammatical conventions and the limited range of complex structures prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and proofreading for basic errors will help improve your accuracy.
