Student answer (Band 6.5)
No 1 Alufuo close,
Nodu Okpuno,
Anambra State, Nigeria.
20th June, 2026.
The Manager,
Five Star Restaurant.
Dear Ma,
APPLICATION FOR THE POSITION OF A WAITRESS
I am writing with regard to the advert of your company on Daily Newspaper. I am particularly interested in the position of a waitress in your famous restaurant. I am a graduate of Hospitality and Home Management in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka where I scored 4.9 on a scale of 5.0
However, since I graduated, I had worked as a bar attendant in a lounge. At the moment, I work as a chef in an average hotel located in an almost primitive environment in Anambra State.
Furthermore, I am confident I would put in my best as your staff when I am given the opportunity to do so. I am diligent and service to humanity is one thing I never complained of doing.
Given this, I would be glad if my request is considered. Also, I am overt to interview whenever I would be called ,especially if it is on a Monday. I look forward to receiving your mail. Thanks.
Yours faithfully,
Favour Amarachi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: current occupation, suitability, and interview availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application, although the opening 'Dear Ma' is slightly informal for a professional context. The ideas are relevant, though the description of the current workplace as a 'primitive environment' is a bit unusual and could be phrased more professionally. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the candidate successfully communicates their background and interest in the role.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to background, suitability, and finally the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Given this' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus on the application process throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The candidate uses some subject-specific terminology like 'Hospitality and Home Management' and 'bar attendant'. However, there are some awkward word choices, such as 'overt to interview' (which should be 'available for an interview') and 'service to humanity', which sounds slightly hyperbolic for a restaurant job. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise professional collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I had worked' (should be 'I have worked') and 'advert of your company' (should be 'advertisement for your company'). Punctuation is generally functional, though the spacing and formatting of the address block are a bit unconventional. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over verb tenses and prepositional usage.
