Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to apply for the job of waitresses at your restaurant, which was advertised in local newspaper on 3 of August. I believe that my qualification and experience make me a perfect candidate for this job.

Currently, I am working as a team supervisor at food street restaurant, where I supervise a team of waiters. I am serving as a responsible worker here but I have an issue from this job. Actually the location of restaurant is far away from my residence, due to which I have transport issues. So I can't continue this job and want to join your Restaurant as a waitress because it's close to me.

Moreover, I had valuable experience that is relevant to the offered post. My previous job has improved my leadership skills and helped me to acquire significant experience in communication competencies.

I am available for interview at any time. my contact no. is [redacted phone] You can contact me easily by the mobile phone number given above. Thank you for your consideration of my application. I look forward to meeting you in the nearest future.

Your's sincerely,

Paul carter

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your current role as a team supervisor, described your relevant experience in communication and leadership, and provided your availability for an interview. The tone is appropriate for a formal job application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of why you are leaving your current job is more professional; mentioning 'transport issues' is acceptable, but focusing more on your desire for professional growth or alignment with the new restaurant's values would strengthen your candidacy. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Currently' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between your current job and your reason for leaving is slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader navigate the information easily. To improve, try to vary your sentence starters and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the restaurant') is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'qualification', 'candidate', 'competencies', and 'consideration'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'issue from this job' (should be 'issue with') and 'food street restaurant' (which lacks capitalization). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision of higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that you are using formal business terminology consistently throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'advertised in local newspaper' (missing article 'a'), 'location of restaurant' (missing article 'the'), and 'Your's sincerely' (incorrect apostrophe). Additionally, 'I have an issue from this job' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage (a/an/the) and ensure that your punctuation, particularly with possessives and formal sign-offs, is accurate.
