Student answer (Band 6.0)
Respected manager
hope u are doing well. I have come to know that you have been searching for waitresses and waiters in your restaurant. I have read this from a local newspaper.
I am currently working as a teacher in a government school where I teach students from class 8 to 10. But now due to some issues at my current job I am looking for a new different job where I feel valuable. Moreover, I have also studied the hotel management so I think I am the appropriate contender for the post. I can fully and efficiently done this job of waitresses at your restaurant.
I can come for the interview in the upcoming Monday. I hope you will consider my request and call for the interview as soon as you find appropriate. I will surely complete my assigned work properly and will not let you down. I will be waiting for your call.
thankyou so much.
Regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: current occupation, suitability, and interview availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation of the current job is brief, and the mention of 'some issues' is vague, which does not contribute to a professional tone. While the candidate mentions hotel management studies, this could have been expanded to better demonstrate suitability. The tone is occasionally informal (e.g., 'hope u are doing well'), which is not ideal for a formal job application letter. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of information provided is basic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the purpose of the letter to personal details and finally to the interview request. Paragraphing is present, though the transitions between ideas are somewhat mechanical. For example, the use of 'Moreover' and 'But' is functional but basic. The referencing is generally clear, though the informal opening and closing lack the standard conventions of a formal business letter, which affects the overall coherence and professional flow of the document.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some informal choices, such as 'u' instead of 'you' and the use of 'contender' where 'candidate' or 'applicant' would be more appropriate. Phrases like 'done this job' are grammatically incorrect and demonstrate a limited range. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more professional collocations related to employment and hospitality, such as 'relevant experience,' 'professional background,' or 'enthusiastic about the opportunity.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Examples include 'I can fully and efficiently done this job' (incorrect verb form) and 'I have also studied the hotel management' (unnecessary article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the salutation and closing. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
