Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
My name is Hasmik Lazaryan and I would like to apply for the waitress position at your restaurant. I have learned about the job opening through the advertisement in the local newspaper.
It is worth mentioning, that I am currently working at Kars Restaurant. However, I have been considering to change my job because of the long commute to work. Your restaurant is located in the vicinity of my neighbourhood, thus making the position very attractive to me. I hold seven years' experience in catering. My interpersonal skills allow me to communicate with customers from different backgrounds and answer questions regarding the menu. I am a food lover myself, and prior to starting at a new workplace, I make sure to get familiar with the food items on the menu, their ingredients, tastes and other peculiarities. It is my ultimate goal to make sure that customers are happy with their food choices and the service.
I am attaching my CV for your consideration. Please feel free to reach out to me should you have further questions. I will be available for the interview on weekdays from 2.00-6.00 pm.
With best regards,
Jasmine

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain your current employment status at Kars Restaurant and provide a logical reason for wanting to leave. Your suitability is well-supported by your seven years of experience in the catering industry and your focus on customer satisfaction. Furthermore, you explicitly state your availability for an interview. The tone is appropriate for a formal job application, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. You have successfully covered all bullet points with sufficient detail to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs detail your background and suitability, and the final paragraph handles the logistics of the interview. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However,' 'thus,' and 'prior to,' which help the text flow naturally. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the referencing is clear throughout. The structure is professional and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business letter. Phrases such as 'in the vicinity of my neighbourhood,' 'interpersonal skills,' and 'further consideration' show a level of sophistication. There is a minor collocation error in 'considering to change,' which should be 'considering changing.' However, this does not impede communication. You use specific terminology related to the catering industry, which adds to the professional tone of the letter. Overall, the vocabulary is precise and well-suited to the context of a job application.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response shows a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively. For example, the sentence 'Your restaurant is located in the vicinity of my neighbourhood, thus making the position very attractive to me' is well-constructed. There are very few errors; the punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structure is varied. The minor error in the infinitive usage after 'considering' is a rare slip that does not detract from the overall clarity or professional quality of the writing. The majority of sentences are error-free.
