Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of waiter advertised in the local newspaper. I am very interested in this opportunity and would like to be considered for the job.

Currently, I am a university student studying Computer Science. I am in the final year of my degree and have free time in the evenings and at weekends. Therefore, I am looking for a part-time job to gain work experience and improve my communication skills.

I believe I am suitable for this position because I am friendly, hardworking and responsible. I enjoy meeting new people and can communicate politely with customers. I can also work well under pressure and as part of a team. Although I have limited experience in this field, I am a quick learner and willing to learn.

I can attend an interview any day after 3 p.m. next week. Please let me know a suitable time.

Yours faithfully,

Muhammad Waqar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your current status as a Computer Science student, justify your suitability by highlighting relevant soft skills like being 'friendly' and 'hardworking', and provide a specific timeframe for an interview. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application, and the purpose of the writing is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a restaurant job application, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the purpose of the letter to personal background, suitability, and finally, logistical details. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Although', and 'I believe' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow, ensuring the reader can navigate the information without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'gain work experience', 'work well under pressure', and 'quick learner' are well-suited to the context of a job application. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or industry-specific terminology related to customer service to demonstrate a more flexible and precise command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The grammar is highly accurate throughout the text. You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although I have limited experience in this field, I am a quick learner and willing to learn.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a strong command of English grammar. The writing is polished and professional, reflecting a high level of control over sentence construction.
