Student answer (Band 5.5)

Hi I'm writing this letter to apply for a job in your restaurant.

Sir/Mam

I hope you are doing well. Currently I am working as a customer servive worker in a local shop for 3 months. Besides my job I'm also taking care of my house. Working in a shop is not convenient to me because I have always been looking forward to working in a restaurant as a waitress. As your advertisement made me aware of a job vacancy I would like to apply.

Working in the shop has given me a better experience to deal with different types of customers and I have learnt alot. Moreover I would make sure that my duties are fulfilled in a great way as my speciality is to communicate in a great way. I am very good at taking notes and remembering the customers ordered products so working as a waitress would not be very difficult for me .

I hope that you consider me and provide an oppurtunity. please inform about the interview schedule so I don't miss it.

Thank you

Sidrah Nazir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the writer explains what they are currently doing by stating, 'Currently I am working as a customer servive worker in a local shop for 3 months.' Second, the student describes their suitability for this area of work, noting that 'Working in the shop has given me a better experience to deal with different types of customers.' Third, the request regarding the interview is adequately covered with the sentence, 'please inform about the interview schedule so I don't miss it.' All parts of the prompt are covered well and relevant ideas are presented, although the salutation is mixed ('Hi' followed by 'Sir/Mam') and the letter structure is slightly informal for a formal application. Overall, the task is fulfilled satisfactorily to meet the criteria for a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression of ideas, moving logically from the initial greeting and current employment to reasons for applying, personal strengths, and finally the interview request. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, though the structure is somewhat compressed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Besides my job', 'Moreover', and 'so', although some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, and the writer guides the reader reasonably well through the letter, despite minor abrupt shifts between thoughts, particularly in the opening lines.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating personal experiences and employment details with phrases like 'customer service worker' and 'different types of customers'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'servive' instead of 'service', 'alot' instead of 'a lot', and 'oppurtunity' instead of 'opportunity'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'speciality' and 'convenient', but precision is occasionally lacking, and repetition of phrases like 'in a great way' limits the lexical flexibility and overall range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to use subordinate clauses ('as my speciality is to communicate in a great way' and 'so working as a waitress would not be very difficult for me'). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing punctuation in the salutation ('Sir/Mam'), incorrect verb tense usage in 'Currently I am working... for 3 months' (which should typically be present perfect continuous), and a run-on structure in the closing request. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication, and the basic meaning remains clear.
