Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of waiter advertised in your local newspaper. I am very interested in this job because I enjoy meeting people and working in a friendly environment.

At present, I am preparing for my English language examination and also helping my family with some household responsibilities. I am looking for a part-time job that will allow me to gain useful work experience while continuing my studies.

I believe I am suitable for this position for several reasons. Firstly, I am polite, responsible and hardworking. I can communicate with customers in a friendly manner and I always try to understand their needs. Secondly, I am comfortable working as part of a team and can remain calm during busy periods. In addition, I am punctual and willing to learn new skills. I also understand that cleanliness and good manners are very important in a restaurant. Although I do not have extensive experience as a waiter, I am confident that I can learn quickly and perform my duties carefully.

Regarding the interview, I am available on weekdays after 3 p.m. and can attend an interview at any convenient time. I would be grateful if you could give me an opportunity to discuss my application in more detail.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Simar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the task. The letter covers every bullet point in detail: it effectively explains what the writer is currently doing by stating they are preparing for an English examination and helping family, clearly describes their suitability for waiting tables through attributes like being polite, hardworking, and a team player, and precisely states when they are available for an interview on weekdays after 3 p.m. The tone is entirely appropriate for a formal job application letter, opening with 'Dear Sir or Madam' and closing correctly. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant personal attributes and context, earning a strong band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear, logical progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose and transitions smoothly into the next. The introduction states the purpose of the letter, the second paragraph explains current circumstances, the third elaborates on job suitability using clear signposting such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', and the final paragraph addresses interview availability. Cohesive devices are used naturally and appropriately without being overused. Paragraphing is well-managed, with single-idea blocks that make the letter easy to follow and navigate, fully meeting the expectations for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is natural, appropriate, and precise for a formal workplace application. The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with good control, incorporating terms such as 'responsibilities', 'extensive experience', 'punctual', and 'convenient time'. While the vocabulary does not frequently venture into advanced or academic idiomatic expressions, it is entirely functional and accurate for the context. Word choice and collocations are correct throughout, with no awkward phrasing that impedes communication. Spelling and word formation are immaculate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a strong command of grammatical structures. The writer successfully employs a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'I am looking for a part-time job that will allow me to gain useful work experience' and 'Although I do not have extensive experience as a waiter, I am confident that I can learn quickly'. Punctuation and verb tenses are handled correctly throughout. The vast majority of sentences are completely error-free, reflecting a high level of grammatical control and accuracy which firmly aligns with the band descriptor for this level.
