Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Recruitment Team,

I am writting to apply for the position of a waiter advertised in the local newspaper.

My name is Alex and I have had interest in hotel management even before entering high school. For that reason, I have met alot of these large hotel managers and asked them how they got to there position, what degree did they purused, so on and so forth. As a result, I recently got admission in the hospitality and hotel management program. Moreover, my degree deals with the service sector of hotel management sector which aligns directly with the professtional requirement of the advertised role.

As for the experience, I have over 7 years of histroy working in resturants, hotels and small pubs in various positions from kitchen staff, receptionist to waitering. I believe my profile to be the perfect match for this role.

I would like to be considered for the opening and discuss further how efficiently I can fulfil the role.

I am available at the earliest or at your convenience.

Regards,

Alex birchland

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student explains their current situation by mentioning that they recently gained admission into a hospitality and hotel management program. Their suitability is described through an impressive seven years of history working in restaurants, hotels, and pubs in various roles ranging from kitchen staff to receptionist. Furthermore, they address the final bullet point by stating their availability for an interview at the earliest convenience. The tone is appropriately formal for a job application letter. Although the opening salutation and sign-off contain minor formatting slips, the content fully meets the communicative purpose of the task, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into distinct paragraphs that correspond to the standard structure of a cover letter, moving from the purpose of writing to personal background, work experience, and finally call-to-action/availability. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'For that reason', 'As a result', and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas clearly. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the response, ensuring a coherent overall arrangement that meets the criteria for this band level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to the hospitality context, using terms like 'hospitality', 'service sector', 'receptionist', and 'professional requirement'. However, there are notable spelling errors and typos, such as 'writting' instead of writing, 'alot' instead of a lot, 'there' instead of their, 'purused' instead of pursued, 'professtional', 'histroy', and 'resturants'. These lexical errors show a lack of precision and control over less common spelling items. While these mistakes do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I have had interest in hotel management even before entering high school' and 'My degree deals with the service sector of hotel management sector which aligns directly with the professional requirement.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'I have had interest in' instead of 'I have had an interest in', 'got to there position' instead of 'got to their position', and 'got admission in' instead of 'gained admission to'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's overall understanding of the message.
