Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. Firstly, she clearly explains what she is currently doing by stating that she is a part-time university student majoring in hospitality management. Secondly, she describes her suitability for this area of work by detailing her past two years of experience as a server at a busy local cafe, highlighting relevant practical skills such as taking orders and handling point-of-sale systems. Finally, she clearly states when she can attend an interview, offering weekday afternoons after 2:00 PM or anytime on weekends. All parts of the task are well-developed and addressed thoroughly, reflecting a Band 8 level of performance for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a clear and logical layout appropriate for a formal job application. Ideas are sequenced effectively, progressing naturally from the purpose of the letter to the candidate's current status, work experience, interview availability, and sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, with each body paragraph focusing on a specific theme. Cohesive devices are managed well, using referencing and conjunctions smoothly without being obtrusive. Although there are minor formatting issues with spacing around punctuation marks, the overall organisation and progression easily merit a Band 7.5, which rounds to a strong 7.5 or Band 8 in cohesive control.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal employment application. She uses collocation and less common terms naturally, such as 'enthusiastic interest', 'hands-on experience', 'peak hour pressure', and 'team collaboration'. There are a few minor slips in word choice and mechanics, such as the incorrect spacing around commas and hyphens (e.g., 'Currently , Iam' and 'hands - on'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is precise enough to convey professional intent effectively, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'leaving my evening and weekends entirely open' and 'where i gained extensive hands-on experience'). There are, however, several recurring mechanical and grammatical errors, notably spacing issues around punctuation, lack of capitalization for the pronoun 'I' in a couple of instances ('Iam', 'i gained'), and a missing preposition in the closing sentence ('Thank you considering my application' should be 'Thank you for considering'). Because these errors persist throughout the text and detract from complete grammatical control, the performance fits comfortably within Band 6.5.
