The Owner

XYZ Restaurant

Subject: Apply for the vacency of Waiters

Dear concern,

I am Abu Sayem Chowdhury, Graduate from South East University in Bachelor of Hotel Management and Tourism. I have 3 months internship experience in this field at Jukumi Restaurant. I have seen in advertising you have free vacency right now in your retaurant. I am highly curious for this position in your restaurant. I have enough academic knowledge and a basic experience in that exact field. I would love to join as a waiter in your retaurant and serve my best to the customer with my polite attitude and previous experience.

It is very pleasure to serve your retaurant as an waiter. If you are interested, please let me know when you want to arrange an interview and I am always ready and waiting for your response.

Best regard,

Abu Sayem Chowdhury

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate has addressed all parts of the prompt satisfactorily. Regarding the first bullet point, the writer explains their current status by stating 'I am Abu Sayem Chowdhury, Graduate from South East University in Bachelor of Hotel Management and Tourism' and mentioning their internship. For the second bullet point, suitability is described through academic knowledge and a basic experience in that exact field. Finally, for the third bullet point, the candidate asks the employer to 'let me know when you want to arrange an interview.' However, the letter is written as a response to a newspaper advertisement for waiters and waitresses, but the prompt actually specifies writing a letter to a restaurant as a General Training task, yet the student used a formal academic-style layout and addressed 'The Owner'. Despite this minor task-type mismatch, the content effectively covers all required bullet points with clear, relevant information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter follows a recognizable structure with an opening, body paragraphs, and a sign-off. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented and could be improved by grouping related ideas more logically rather than using many short, single-sentence paragraphs. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'I have' and 'I would'. While there is a clear overall progression from introduction to stating experience, expressing interest, and requesting an interview, the referencing and transitional links between sentences are occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition from 'I am highly curious for this position' to 'I have enough academic knowledge' lacks smooth cohesive ties. Overall, the organization is coherent enough for a functional reading, but cohesion requires more variety and sophistication.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains somewhat basic and repetitive. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary related to the field, such as 'Bachelor of Hotel Management and Tourism' and 'internship experience', which demonstrates relevant topic-specific language. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'vacency' instead of 'vacancy', 'retaurant' instead of 'restaurant' (multiple occurrences), and the awkward salutation 'Dear concern' instead of 'Dear Sir/Madam'. Furthermore, phrases like 'I am highly curious for this position' are unnatural in a job application context. While these lexical errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score to a solid band 5.5, reflecting a limited yet minimally adequate range with noticeable mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The candidate attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would love to join as a waiter in your retaurant and serve my best to the customer with my polite attitude and previous experience.' However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including missing articles ('Graduate from', 'in Bachelor of', 'as an waiter'), capitalization errors ('Subject: Apply for the vacency'), and prepositional issues. Sentences like 'I have seen in advertising you have free vacency right now' lack grammatical precision. Although the basic meaning remains understandable and the errors rarely completely impede communication, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The majority of sentences contain minor inaccuracies that impact overall grammatical accuracy.
