Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Recruiting Team.

Hope you are doing well. I saw an advertisement published by your restaurant. You guys are looking for waiters and waitresses. I'm really interested in this job and want to apply here.

I'm currently working as a waitress in a restaurant named " Le Pasta". I'm working here for the past 2 years. But my workplace is a little far from my home. So, I'm looking for a job near my home. And your location is just perfect for me. I think I'll do better at your place, as I stay nearby, so I won't be late for work. In case of any emergency, I'll be just 10 minutes away, so if anyone gets any emergency, I'll be able to cover their shifts easily. I also have 2 years of experience, and I believe my experience will be helpful for your restaurant to run.

I'm available for an interview every day from 9:00 AM to 2 PM. After that, I'll have to attend my job. Looking forward to your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt. The writer explains what they are currently doing by stating they work as a waitress at Le Pasta for the past two years. Suitability is clearly described through relevant experience and practical advantages, such as living nearby, which allows for shift coverages and punctuality. Finally, the availability for an interview is precisely stated as every day from 9:00 AM to 2 PM. The tone is appropriate for a job application letter, and the ideas are extended well to demonstrate fitness for the role, aligning comfortably with a Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct function: introduction, body detailing current situation and suitability, and conclusion regarding interview availability. Cohesive devices are used, though some transitions feel a bit basic or mechanical (e.g., 'So, I'm looking...', 'And your location...'). Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is managed appropriately. While it lacks the flexibility and sophistication of higher bands, the logical progression is clear throughout, supporting a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor profile, settling well at 6.5 due to repetitive sentence openers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The lexical resource is adequate for the task, demonstrating an ability to use relevant vocabulary related to employment and restaurant work (e.g., 'advertisement', 'waitresses', 'experience', 'shifts', 'interview'). However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is reliance on simpler vocabulary and informal phrasing, such as 'You guys are looking for' and 'run'. There are minor collocation issues, such as saying 'get any emergency' instead of 'have an emergency' or 'face an emergency'. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is fully sufficient to communicate meaning without difficulty, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. There are good instances of complex structures, such as 'I think I'll do better at your place, as I stay nearby, so I won't be late for work.' However, there are grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as 'I'm working here for the past 2 years' (which should use the present perfect continuous tense 'have been working') and punctuation slips like 'Dear Recruiting Team.' using a period instead of a comma. While these errors occur, they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to secure a solid Band 6.
