A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I have seen your advertisement in newspaper and want to apply for the position of waiter in your restaurant. I am currently studying a bachelors degree in a college which is nearby to your restaurant. I have done different odd jobs before which include working as a salesman in a mall and cashier in a coffee shop. I want to be a waiter part-time to earn money to support myself and lease the burden of my parents. I have good communication skills and can also handle different kind of situations with patience. I am very energetic, talkative and positive person. I have the ability to convince others to listen to me. I will also encourage my friends to come and taste the food of your restaurant. I am available to attend the interview on weekends since it is convenient . I would really appreciate if you will give me a chance to prove myself.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering current activities, suitability, and interview availability. You explain that you are studying nearby and detail your past odd jobs like working as a salesman and cashier, which demonstrates your direct relevance to a customer-facing role. Furthermore, you state your availability for weekend interviews. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or touch upon irrelevant details, such as promising to encourage your friends to visit the restaurant rather than strictly focusing on your own professional attributes. This balance of covering all required bullet points while leaving certain points partially developed positions your task response securely at this level, showing clear competence alongside room for fuller elaboration of your skills.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement, and the reader can easily follow your purpose in writing. You successfully transition from stating your reason for writing to your current status, past experiences, personal qualities, and finally your interview availability. Nevertheless, cohesion at times feels mechanical or lacks smooth transitional phrases between sentences. For instance, moving abruptly from describing your personality traits to mentioning that you will encourage your friends creates a slightly disjointed flow. Additionally, the lack of traditional paragraph breaks means the entire letter is presented as a single block of text, which holds back the logical organisation and overall progression of the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms like 'advertisement', 'position', 'part-time', and 'communication skills'. You also attempt some less common phrases, though this is accompanied by some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'studying a bachelors degree in a college which is nearby' instead of 'studying for a bachelor's degree at a nearby college', and 'lease the burden' instead of 'ease the burden'. Fortunately, these lexical slips and minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, and your meaning remains clear throughout the letter, which fully aligns with the expectations for this lexical level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses like 'which include working as a salesman' and conditional ideas. You demonstrate control over basic verb tenses and word order. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in newspaper' instead of 'in the newspaper'), preposition choices ('in a college' instead of 'at a college'), and missing commas before clauses or coordinate conjunctions. These errors occur throughout the text but they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily grasp your message while reflecting a mixture of accurate structures and occasional grammatical lapses.
