Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I have seen the advertisement that you have placed in the local newspaper for hiring waiters and waitresses and I would like to apply for the job of a waiter.

Currently, I am a student at the nearby university pursuing a masters in civil engineering and I am looking for a part-time job that could help me paying my accomodation bills and could also help me with some tuition.

I have excellent communication skills along with some great etiquettes that could successfully help in serving the customers. The main job of a waiter is to get the orders and serve them without any difficulty in recognising the tables and I am very confident in this type of work. I am also punctual and polite. I will always be on time and never argue with the customers and staff.

If you are willing to consider me as a suitable candidate for the job I can attend the interview during the weekend as I am busy with classes during the week. I will be very thankful to you for the opportunity.

Yours sincerely,

Jatin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task, representing a solid performance that meets the criteria for the lower level fully while touching upon elements of the next. You clearly explain your current situation as a civil engineering master's student looking for part-time work, detail your suitability through communication skills and politeness, and specify when you can attend an interview. However, some ideas show a slight imbalance in development. While your personal background and interview availability are well-articulated, your explanation of suitability relies a bit on general assertions rather than fully extending specific hospitality experience. To reach a higher tier, you would need to elaborate more fully on past experiences or specific service scenarios rather than broadly stating that you possess good etiquettes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear overall logical organization and progression throughout. You begin with a standard, appropriate salutation and clear opening statement regarding the advertisement, progress logically through your personal background, qualifications, and interview availability, and conclude with an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, with each paragraph handling a distinct function corresponding to the task instructions. Cohesive devices such as 'Currently', 'along with', and 'If you are willing' are employed adequately to link ideas, although referencing occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless. To push into higher scoring territory, ensure smoother transitions between sentences and a more natural flow of cohesive phrasing throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message while attempting some less common lexical items such as 'pursuing', 'suitable candidate', and 'etiquettes'. However, there are a few notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For instance, the spelling 'accomodation' contains a double-consonant error, and the phrase 'some great etiquettes' is slightly unnatural since 'etiquette' is generally an uncountable noun in this context. Additionally, phrases like 'get the orders' could be expressed with more precise professional vocabulary. These minor slips do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher score, you must demonstrate greater precision in word choice, better control of spelling, and more natural collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and complex clauses like 'I am a student at the nearby university pursuing a masters in civil engineering and I am looking for a part-time job that could help me paying my accomodation bills'. There are some grammatical errors present, most notably the gerund usage in 'help me paying' instead of 'help me pay', and occasional punctuation or article slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and your overall control of tense and structure remains fairly stable. To attain a higher band, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor prepositional and verb-pattern mistakes.
