Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Hr, Simon
Subject: Applying for the job of waiter,
I hope you are doing well, i saw an advertisment in local newspaper for vacant seats of waiters at your resturant, therefore i want to take your attention on that mater and to be part of your team, although right now i am doing a same kind of work for a small cafe opposite to your resturant, but there is always a dream of mine to work at big resturants like this, because it provides the way of learning new skills with addition to good enviroment and pay in return , so if i will get that opportunity i would love to join it, furthermore i will be able for interview as soon as you it,
Sincerly,
Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the purpose of the letter and mention your current café job, your interest in joining the restaurant, and your availability for an interview. However, the application addresses the requirements only partially: suitability is asserted through doing “a same kind of work,” but you give no specific skills or examples, and “as soon as you it” does not clearly state when you can attend. The response is also below the required 150 words, leaving little room to develop these points. Add relevant details, such as customer-service experience, handling busy periods, or teamwork, and give a definite interview time or range. A more appropriate greeting and closing would also make the application complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The reader can follow the basic purpose, and the ideas appear in a broadly sensible order: you introduce the vacancy, explain your current work, and express interest. However, nearly all the content is placed in one long paragraph, so the different parts of the application are not clearly separated. The sentence beginning “I saw an advertisement” continues through several ideas joined by “therefore,” “although,” “because,” and “furthermore,” which makes the progression difficult to follow. Some linking is attempted, but it is not always used to show the relationship between ideas clearly. Organise the letter into short paragraphs—for example, purpose, experience and suitability, then interview availability—and use simpler transitions where needed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the general purpose, including “advertisement,” “opportunity,” “skills,” and “interview.” There are also attempts to use more formal language, such as “take your attention,” but this phrase is not a natural collocation in an application letter and makes the meaning less clear. Several spelling errors, including “advertisment,” “resturant,” “enviroment,” and “Sincerly,” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the writing. Some expressions are also vague, such as “a same kind of work” and “big restaurants.” Build a more precise set of job-application phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make your message clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect several ideas in a complex sentence, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, the response relies heavily on one extended sentence, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty. For example, “if I will get that opportunity” uses an unsuitable verb form after “if,” while “I will be able for interview as soon as you it” has an incomplete grammatical structure. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and capitalisation, such as the lowercase “i” and the comma after the subject line. Use shorter, complete sentences and practise conditional forms, such as “If I am offered the position, I would be pleased to join.” Proofread punctuation and sentence structure before submitting.
