IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in applying to the job of waiter that was advertised in the local newspaper. I am currently a student in the Comsats University Islamabad where I am studying the science of geoinformatics in the MS degree program.
I bring quite a high level of expertise in the domain of serving guests as a waiter. I did numerous internships in restaurants during my bachelors program as well as in the current MS program, the reason for doing it was to fund my studies and also due to my passion of serving guests.
I find this opportunity really intriguing and believe that I could be a great additon to your waiters team. I would be glad to get a reply and discuss my profile in detail with you. If given the chance I will prove to be the best employee you have ever hired.
Yours faithfully,
Yahya Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The letter makes its purpose clear and includes relevant information about your current studies and previous restaurant experience. You explain that you are studying geoinformatics at Comsats University and that you have completed restaurant internships to help fund your studies and because you enjoy serving guests. However, the response only minimally fulfils the full task: it does not say when you are available for an interview, and your suitability is asserted more than demonstrated. For example, “a high level of expertise” and “the best employee” are not supported with specific skills or examples. To address the task more fully, add concrete strengths such as customer service, teamwork or handling busy shifts, and give a clear interview time or range of dates.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter follows a recognisable application format, with a greeting, an opening purpose, supporting information and a sign-off. The ideas are generally understandable, and the sequence from your studies to your experience and interest is sensible. However, the body is presented as one continuous block, so the different points are not clearly separated. The transition from your current studies to your internships could also be smoother, and the final paragraph moves quickly from interest to a request for a reply and a strong claim about your performance. Use separate paragraphs for your current situation, relevant experience and interview availability, and connect them with simple, natural transitions to make the progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a job application, including “express my interest,” “expertise,” “internships” and “passion.” These choices communicate your meaning, and the tone is mostly appropriate. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “applying to the job” is less idiomatic than “applying for the position,” while “a great additon to your waiters team” contains a spelling error and an awkward phrase. “The science of geoinformatics” is also unnecessarily wordy in this context. Aim for natural collocations and precise, professional wording, and proofread spelling. Replacing broad claims with specific service-related vocabulary would also make your suitability more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms. For example, “I am currently a student … where I am studying…” combines related information, and “If given the chance I will prove…” uses a conditional structure. Most sentences remain easy to understand, but some grammatical choices are inaccurate or awkward. In “applying to the job,” the preposition does not fit the intended pattern; “during my bachelors program” needs a possessive form, and “the reason for doing it was…” creates an unclear connection to the preceding sentence. The conditional opening would also read more smoothly with a comma after “chance.” Review prepositions, possessives and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied structures.
