IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
Respected Manager,
I saw an advertisement that you are looking for waiters/waitress in your restaurant. As I recently graduated and looking for a job. I found this job suitable for me because it is near to my house which is located in F 6 next street of your restaurant. Its convenient for me because as of now fuel prices are so high so going far for a job large fuel is used which is difficult for a poor person to manage. It takes only 5 minutes to reach on your restaurant for me so i highly prefer this job.
Your interview date is November 3rd,2026 at 11:00am i will be there at 10:30am.
looking forward for your response
Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response makes a basic attempt to apply for the advertised role and gives a reason for wanting it: the restaurant is close to home. However, it only partially addresses the required points. Saying “I recently graduated” does not explain what you are currently doing, and the letter gives no relevant evidence of suitability, such as customer-service experience, communication skills, or reliability. The interview sentence states a date and time, but it reads as though the restaurant has set the appointment rather than you offering your availability. The response is also 30 words below the required minimum, leaving little space to develop the missing details. Add a clear account of your current situation, specific strengths, and a polite offer of interview times.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The main ideas can be followed: you refer to the advertisement, explain that the restaurant is nearby, and mention an interview. However, the response is presented as one block, with no clear paragraphing to separate the application, suitability, and availability. The opening “As I recently graduated and looking for a job” is a fragment, which interrupts the progression from the advertisement to your reason for applying. The repeated explanation about distance and fuel also takes space without advancing the application. Use a conventional letter structure, with a brief opening, a paragraph about your current situation and relevant qualities, and a closing paragraph offering interview availability. Linking phrases should guide the reader through these points rather than repeat the same reason.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the central reason for applying, including “advertisement,” “suitable,” and “convenient.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are awkward or imprecise for a formal job application. “Looking for waiters/waitress” is not a natural way to describe the vacancy, while “large fuel is used” and “poor person to manage” make the explanation difficult to interpret. “Reach on your restaurant” is also an unsuitable collocation. Choose standard employment and service vocabulary, such as “advertising for waiting staff,” “customer-service experience,” and “reach the restaurant.” More precise wording would make your application sound professional and reduce the effort required to understand your meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response relies mainly on simple sentence patterns, and several grammatical errors affect clarity. “As I recently graduated and looking for a job” is an incomplete sentence; it needs a subject and a correctly formed verb phrase, such as “I recently graduated and am looking for a job.” In “I found this job suitable for me because it is near to my house,” the sentence is understandable, but the structure could be more controlled. The interview statement also needs clearer punctuation and sentence boundaries: “Your interview date is November 3rd, 2026 at 11:00am i will be there…” combines separate ideas and has an uncapitalised “i.” Practise complete sentences, consistent capitalisation, and punctuation, while adding a few accurate complex sentences to explain your qualifications and availability.
