To Restaurant XYZ manager,
Respected mam/sir, hope you are doing well. I'm writing this letter to inform you that i came across the advertisement for the hiring of waiters and waitresses at your restaurant XYZ. I'm interested in applying for the job, as i've worked at a few restaurants before and i'm familiar with all the duties assigned to it. I'm currently a student and since my summer vacation just started

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The opening makes the purpose clear: you saw the vacancy and want to apply, and you mention that you are currently a student whose summer vacation has started. You also begin to establish relevant experience by saying you have worked in a few restaurants. However, the response stops before explaining your suitability in any detail or saying when you can attend an interview, so two required points are not addressed. The letter is also substantially below the required 150 words, which leaves the task only minimally completed. To improve, develop your experience with specific duties or strengths, state your interview availability, and include a suitable closing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The ideas follow a basic, understandable order: you introduce the advertisement, state your interest, and then begin describing your current situation. The opening also makes the letter’s purpose easy to identify. However, the response ends mid-sentence after “since my summer vacation just started,” so there is no complete progression to your suitability, interview availability, or closing. The salutation and opening are presented as separate lines, but there is no paragraph development beyond this initial section. Complete the sentence and organise the letter into short paragraphs—for example, application and current situation, relevant experience, then interview availability and sign-off. This would make the organisation more complete and the connections between points clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the main purpose, including “advertisement,” “applying for the job,” “student,” and “worked at a few restaurants.” These choices are relevant to the application. However, the range is limited, and phrases such as “all the duties assigned to it” are vague and not very natural for describing restaurant experience. More precise language would help you explain your suitability, such as naming customer service, taking orders, or working during busy periods. The response is too short to show much flexibility or a wider range of formal application vocabulary. Aim for clear, specific expressions rather than broad claims, and use a consistently professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes a mixture of simple statements and a longer sentence beginning “I'm interested in applying … as i've worked…,” showing an attempt to connect ideas. The main meaning is generally understandable. However, the final sentence is incomplete: “I'm currently a student and since my summer vacation just started” has no completed main clause after “since.” There are also errors in capitalisation, including “i” and “i've,” and the opening “hope you are doing well” lacks an explicit subject. Most structures are straightforward, so the range is limited. Write complete sentences, check capital letters and punctuation, and practise combining clauses without leaving a thought unfinished.
