Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of waiter advertised in your local newspaper. I am interested in this job because i enjoy meeting people and providing good customer service.

Currently, I am a student, and I am looking for a part-time job to gain work experience and earn some money. I believe that working in your restaurant would be great opportunity for me to develop my communication skills and learn new things.

I thinnk i am suitable for this position because i am freindly, hardworking and resposible. I can communicate with customers and work well with people. I am also willing to learn new skills and follow the rules of your restaurant. In addition, I can work under pressure and remain calm when the restaurant is busy. Altough i do not have much experience in this field, I am confident that i can learn quickly.

I am able to attend interview at any time during the weekend. However, If you prefer a weekday, I can arrange my schedule according to your convenience.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Abdul Rafay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that you are a student seeking part-time work, describe relevant qualities such as being friendly and calm under pressure, and state that you can attend an interview at weekends or arrange a weekday. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the polite closing suits a formal application. Your reasons for suitability are relevant and supported with several examples, although they remain somewhat general; a brief example of helping customers, teamwork, or handling a busy situation would make the case more convincing. Overall, the response covers the task clearly, with room to develop its supporting details further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear, logical progression: application and motivation, current circumstances, suitability, interview availability, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Currently,” “In addition,” and “However” guide the reader through the points. The sequence is easy to follow throughout. To make the organisation more polished, keep paragraph spacing consistent and use transitions only where they clarify a genuine relationship between ideas; for example, “Although I have limited experience” could lead directly into how quickly you expect to learn. The overall structure is effective, with some scope for more flexible and precise linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a job application, including relevant phrases such as “customer service,” “work under pressure,” and “gain work experience.” These choices communicate your motivation and suitability clearly. However, much of the wording is familiar and general, and several spelling errors—“thinnk,” “freindly,” “resposible,” and “Altough”—are noticeable. Some phrases could also be more precise or natural: “great opportunity” needs an article, while “learn new things” is vague. Aim to use accurate spelling and a few more specific employment-related expressions, such as describing how you would assist diners or contribute to a team.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a useful mix of simple and more complex sentences. For instance, “Although I do not have much experience in this field, I am confident that I can learn quickly” shows an effective subordinate clause, and most of the message remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors persist, including the missing article in “would be great opportunity” and “attend interview,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation of “I” and “If.” The sentence patterns are generally clear, but several are built in a similar way. Check articles and capital letters carefully, and practise varying sentence structures while maintaining accuracy.
