Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear hiring manager,

Following an advertisement in a recent local newspaper, I am writing to apply for a job as a waiter in your restaurant.

I am currently working as self-employed food-and-drinks seller who specializes in delivering home-made meals to prospective clients. I personally make and deliver most of these meals. Additionally, I source for experts to make specialty cuisines for me if my clients' orders so demand.

Having trained as a chef for three years at Chefs United College, as well as having taken several courses in waiter services, I am suitably qualified for this role. I also bring with me five years of experience as a waiter in several outstanding cafes as you can see in my attached resume.

I am available for interviews and any requisite demos in the next two weeks. Given that my current job is largely freelance, I am flexible enough to easily fit your invitation for an interview into my schedule.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Henry Kathagu.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain your current self-employment, give relevant qualifications and experience, and state when you can attend an interview. The details about training at Chefs United College and five years as a waiter make your suitability clear, while the freelance nature of your work supports your availability. These ideas are relevant and generally extended with useful specifics. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the interview timing: “in the next two weeks” is broad, so offering particular days or times would be more helpful. You could also make the connection between your current food business and the restaurant role slightly more explicit. Overall, the purpose and tone of the application are clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear and effective sequence: application purpose, current work, qualifications and experience, availability, and a polite closing. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to locate, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Given that” help show how details relate. The progression is logical and the letter is straightforward to follow. To strengthen cohesion further, some transitions could be less formulaic and more closely connect the evidence to your suitability—for example, link your food preparation and delivery experience directly to customer service in a restaurant. The opening and closing are appropriate for a formal application, although consistent formatting of the salutation and sign-off would make the presentation more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a job application, including “self-employed,” “specialty cuisines,” “suitably qualified,” “requisite,” and “freelance.” These choices communicate your experience and availability clearly, and there is some variety beyond basic wording. However, a few expressions are awkward or imprecise in this context. “Source for experts” is not a natural way to describe arranging specialist food preparation, and “prospective clients” sounds less direct than language about customers. “Any requisite demos” is also unclear for a waiter application. More natural collocations and precise service-related vocabulary would improve fluency and control. The meaning remains understandable, but these occasional choices limit the overall naturalness of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including the introductory clause “Following an advertisement…” and the longer sentence beginning “Having trained as a chef…”. Most sentences are clear and well controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical issues remain. In “working as self-employed food-and-drinks seller,” the singular count noun needs an article (“a self-employed…”). In “I source for experts,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “I source experts” or “I arrange for experts…”. The phrase “if my clients’ orders so demand” is also grammatically awkward and would be clearer as “when my clients’ orders require it.” These are limited issues, but correcting them would make the complex phrasing more consistently accurate.
