Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of waiter advertised in your local newspaper.

currently, i am a student and i am looking for a part-time job. I would like to work in your restaurant because i want to gain work experience and improve my communication skills.

I believe i am suitable for this job because i am hardworking, polite and friendly. I can communicate well with people and work as part of a team. I am also willing to learn new skills and follow the instructions of my manager. In addition, i can remain calm and helpful when the restaurant is busy.

I am available for an interview on any weekday afternoon. However, if another time is more convenient for you, i would be happy to arrage a suitable time.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

your faithfully,

X-Y-z

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you are a student seeking part-time work, describe relevant qualities such as being “polite and friendly” and able to work in a team, and give weekday afternoons as interview availability. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the closing is appropriate. The suitability section is relevant, but it relies mainly on general personal qualities; a brief example of customer service, teamwork, or handling a busy setting would make the application more convincing. Your reason for wanting the role—gaining experience and improving communication skills—is useful, though it could be linked more directly to what you would contribute to the restaurant. This covers the task well, with some ideas less developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear, logical sequence: application purpose, current situation and motivation, suitability, interview availability, and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader identify each part, while transitions such as “In addition” and “However” connect related points effectively. The progression is easy to follow and the tone remains consistent. To make the organisation still more polished, ensure each paragraph begins with a capital letter and use the conventional sign-off consistently; these presentation details would support the otherwise clear structure. The link between your current studies and your suitability could also be made more explicit, rather than leaving the reader to infer it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is appropriate to a job application and communicates the main points clearly, with useful phrases such as “part-time job,” “work as part of a team,” and “remain calm and helpful.” However, the range is fairly basic and several descriptions are general, including “hardworking, polite and friendly” and “gain work experience.” More precise language about customer service or reliability would show greater flexibility and make your application more distinctive. There are also spelling and form errors: “arr age” is written as “arrage,” and “your faithfully” should be “Yours faithfully.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more varied, precise wording would strengthen this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the reason clause “because I want to gain work experience” and the conditional phrase “if another time is more convenient for you.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the errors do not impede understanding. Some accuracy issues remain, especially the repeated failure to capitalise “I” and the opening “currently,” which should begin with a capital letter after the salutation and paragraph break. The sign-off also needs the conventional capitalisation and form, “Yours faithfully.” To improve, proofread for sentence beginnings, pronoun capitalisation, and consistent formal-letter conventions while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
