IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear concern,
I hope you are doing well. In pursuance of your advertisement in the local newpaper, I am writing to you to express my interest in joining your restaurant as a waiter.
I have completed my high school graduation just a couple of month ago and am currently looking for job opportunities in the food and hospitality industry. Alongside my education, I used to regularly participate in debate competitions which is where I have developed my public speaking skills. In addition, I used to volunteer in a chinese soup kitchen that served tomato soups to the poor, homeless and destitute people in my area. These experiences have equipped me with the skills needed to do well as a waiter in your restaurant. I believe my skills will be further sharpened if I get a chance to work at your reputed establishment.
I am a resident of the neighbourhood in which your restaurant is located. Hence, I can drop by with my resume for an interview at your earliest convenience. I sincerely look forward to hearing from you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that you have recently finished high school and are seeking work, give relevant examples of public speaking and volunteering, and indicate that you can attend an interview. The examples make your application credible, and your interest in the restaurant is clear. However, suitability is not fully developed: explain more directly how debating and serving people have prepared you for customer service, teamwork, or busy shifts. The interview arrangement is also somewhat vague; “at your earliest convenience” does not identify specific days or times. A more explicit link between your experience and the waiter role, plus a definite availability window, would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure, moving from the purpose of writing to your background and suitability, then to interview availability. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “In addition” and “Hence” help connect ideas. The sequence is easy to follow, although some connections feel formulaic rather than fully natural. For example, “Alongside my education” introduces debate competitions, but the relationship between these activities and your education is not especially clear. The final paragraph also combines your local residence with interview availability without specifying a time. Use transitions that show the precise relationship between ideas, and make the closing arrangement more explicit, to create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal application, including phrases such as “express my interest,” “public speaking skills,” and “hospitality industry.” Some less common choices show ambition, but a few are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “Dear concern” is not a suitable salutation, “in pursuance of” sounds overly formal, and “reputed establishment” is less natural than a straightforward expression of respect. There are also spelling and word-choice slips, including “newpaper” and “chinese,” which should be “newspaper” and “Chinese.” Aim for precise, natural application language rather than ornate phrasing, and check spelling and capitalization carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains clear. For instance, the sentence beginning “In addition” includes a relative clause, while “Hence, I can drop by…” shows an attempt to express a result. Some grammatical errors remain. In “a couple of month ago,” the plural form “months” is needed; “looking for job opportunities” requires an article or plural construction; and “I used to volunteer” may suggest a past habit rather than current or relevant experience. The long sentence about volunteering would also benefit from clearer, more controlled phrasing. Review articles, plurals, and tense choices, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
