Student answer (Band 5.5)

Greetings,

I am currently a second year master's student, and at the same time I have been looking for a part time job. This offer itnerest me and I do believe I do have the qualities for such position, I have worked before as a waiter in a restaurant in my hometown and I am used to frequent social interactions on a daily basis and I have came across different situations with customers and I always believe I had the good reflexes and reactions and the most optimal thought flow on how to handle each situation and my coworkers and boss at work vouched for that. I have an experience on how to handle the intense flow of customers and work at certain times of the day during the week, and always was able to deliver the best quality of service to obtain custoemrs' satisfaction. I am open to further discuss the offer including the time of work as well as the payment and all the details possible, I would be free starting from the next week the whole mornings for a job itnerview, really looking forward to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the three requested points: you explain that you are a second-year master’s student seeking part-time work, describe previous waiter experience and customer-service strengths, and state that you are available for an interview on weekday mornings from next week. These details make the application relevant and give the restaurant a reason to consider you. However, some points are less fully developed: your current studies are mentioned without explaining how they fit around the job, and your availability could be more precise by naming particular days or times. The letter would also feel more complete with a clear application purpose and a polite closing. Overall, the main information is present, though not all parts are equally developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a broadly sensible order, moving from your current situation to your experience and then to interview availability. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long paragraph, and the extended sentence beginning “This offer interest me” combines several separate ideas. This makes the progression harder to follow and weakens the effect of your relevant details. Cohesive links such as “and,” “as well as,” and “including” are repeated, while the relationship between some points is not clearly signposted. Separate the letter into short paragraphs—for example, purpose/current situation, suitability, and availability—and use clearer sentence boundaries and transitions. This would make the organisation easier to follow without changing the content.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the role, including “waiter,” “customers,” “quality of service,” and “customer satisfaction,” and phrases such as “intense flow of customers” show an attempt to describe busy periods. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “This offer interest me,” “the most optimal thought flow,” and “deliver the best quality of service to obtain customers’ satisfaction” do not sound natural in an application. There are also spelling errors, including “itnerest,” “custoemrs’,” and “itnerview.” Aim for precise, conventional employment language, such as “I am interested in the position,” “handle customer enquiries effectively,” and “maintain a high standard of service.” Proofreading spelling would improve clarity and professionalism.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect ideas using longer structures, and the reader can generally understand your main message. However, the response relies heavily on one extended sentence, so sentence boundaries and punctuation are not controlled consistently. There are also some errors in verb forms and sentence construction: “I have came across” should be “I have come across,” and “and always was able” needs a subject and a more natural tense, such as “and I was always able.” The phrase “I do believe I do have” also repeats the auxiliary unnecessarily. Use a mix of shorter, complete sentences and carefully controlled complex sentences. Check verb forms, subjects, and punctuation when joining clauses; this will make your experience and availability easier to understand.
