IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to apply for the position of cashier which was advertised in newspaper. I am also capable of doing a job as waiter. Although, I have heard good reputation about your restaurant and customers always gave positive reviews about the food and service.
I am a student of Humber public college and I have been looking for a part time job to meet my daily life expenses. My accomodation is just 1km away from the restaurant and it wont be challenging for me to catch up in busy days. I am very comfortable for this area of work because I have connections in this area and I can suggest them to show up in your restaurant. I am willing that you will hire me for this job. I am free on the upcoming three days, you can email me whenever you want me to attend the interview. Thanks for your corporation.
Your's faithfully,
Abdullah.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You make the purpose clear by applying for a restaurant role, and you address your current situation by saying you are a Humber Public College student seeking part-time work. You also give reasons for your suitability, including living nearby and being able to recommend the restaurant to people you know, and you state that you are available over the next three days. However, the response only partially fulfils the task: the advertisement is for waiters and waitresses, but you lead with an application for a cashier position, leaving your intended role unclear. Your suitability is also asserted rather than supported with relevant experience or service-related skills, and the interview arrangement is vague. State the exact role, give a concrete example of relevant ability, and suggest specific interview times.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter follows a broadly sensible order: it opens with the application, explains your current studies, gives reasons you could work at the restaurant, and ends with interview availability. This makes the main points identifiable. However, the ideas are packed into one body paragraph, so the progression is not clearly signposted, and some links feel abrupt. For example, the restaurant’s positive reviews are introduced before your circumstances, while the claim about recommending it to your connections does not clearly explain your suitability as a waiter. The closing also moves quickly from availability to thanks. Use separate paragraphs for your application and current situation, your relevant qualities, and interview arrangements; connect each point directly to the task.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the main message, including phrases such as “part time job,” “positive reviews,” and “attend the interview.” There are also attempts to use more formal language, such as “position” and “advertised.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the letter less clear: “meet my daily life expenses,” “comfortable for this area of work,” and “Thanks for your corporation.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “accomodation” and “Your’s.” Choose conventional application-letter expressions and check spelling carefully. More precise service vocabulary, such as customer service, handling payments, or working during busy periods, would make your suitability more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the reader can generally understand your message. For instance, “I am a student … and I have been looking for a part time job” combines present and present-perfect forms appropriately, while “Although” introduces an attempt at a subordinate clause. However, control is uneven: “Although, I have heard…” is not a complete or correctly punctuated use of although, and “I am willing that you will hire me” has an incorrect clause pattern. There are also article and sentence-boundary issues in “advertised in newspaper” and “I am free on the upcoming three days, you can email me.” Practise complete subordinate clauses and use a full stop or semicolon to separate independent clauses.
