IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Restaurant Team,
I hope you are in good health.
This is Khizat Ali, a Pharmacist by profession and right now working as a Business development officer at AJM Pharma, an ocology-based pharmacuetical company situated on Club Rd, Karcahi, Pakistan.
I came across your advertisment regarding the waitress in your restraunt. For this, I think I would be a great fit for this position. My office is nearby and as someone who has been trying to have an additional source of income with an experience of gaining clients/customers, this job seems like an amazing opportunity. I have a good quality of satisfying customers and making them feel better about the place which I would consider one of the most required skill for this position.
Hence, I would like you to have my interview aligned. I am able to attend the interview from any date available after 20th October 2026.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Warm Regards,
Khizat Ali.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the three requested points: you explain your current work, give reasons you could suit the role, and state when you are available for an interview. Your experience in business development and customer contact is relevant, and the availability date is clear. However, suitability is only partly developed: “a good quality of satisfying customers” is vague, and you do not give a concrete example of customer service or explain how your skills would transfer to waiting tables. The application also says “waitress,” although the advertisement is for waiters and waitresses, and “have my interview aligned” does not clearly make a natural request. Add a specific example and a direct, professional request to strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter follows a generally understandable order, moving from your current employment to your reasons for applying and then interview availability. Paragraph breaks help separate these points, and the closing is appropriate. However, progression is somewhat uneven: “For this” and “Hence” do not clearly connect the ideas that follow, and the long sentence beginning “My office is nearby” combines location, income needs, experience, and motivation without a clear hierarchy. The opening and closing are also brief, while the central paragraph carries several different functions. Use clearer transitions and organise the body so that your current situation, relevant skills, and interview request each have a distinct purpose.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant employment and customer-service vocabulary, including “Business development officer,” “additional source of income,” and “clients/customers.” These choices make your purpose understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “a good quality of satisfying customers,” “have my interview aligned,” and “regarding the waitress.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “advertisment,” “restraunt,” “ocology-based,” and “pharmacuetical,” which reduce the professional impression of an application. Aim for precise, conventional phrases such as “customer-service skills,” “apply for the waiting staff position,” and “arrange an interview.” Proofreading spelling and choosing natural collocations would make your vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and some longer sentence forms, and the main message is usually understandable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in sentence construction and punctuation. “This is Khizat Ali, a Pharmacist by profession and right now working…” is an incomplete or awkwardly joined introduction; a complete sentence would be clearer. In “I have a good quality of satisfying customers and making them feel better about the place which I would consider…,” the relative clause has an unclear reference and the sentence is difficult to follow. Extra spacing and punctuation around “For this,” and “the interview” also need attention. Use complete, direct sentences and check clause links and punctuation to improve accuracy.
