IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I am writing this letter to request to you; I need a job. Currently I am a teacher in a school, but the salary is very low, and I am unable to manage my family expenses. Actually, my father is a labor in a small factory, and his income is not much to bear our expenses. One of brother and sister are in school and I want to educate them that's why I need a job as a waiter because its salary is little high than a schoolteacher. Moreover, I also worked as a waiter in a restaurant of Paris in 2010. I have a great experience of this job, and I also have a diploma of this job. I really want this job and I humble request you to give me this opportunity. I will not disappear you. I will give an interview to the next week, now the I'm little busy in school's work. I hope you will give me a chance to do this job.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You include the main requested information: you explain that you currently teach, give reasons for seeking the job, mention previous restaurant experience and a diploma, and state that you can attend an interview next week. These details make the application relevant. However, the response only partially fulfils the purpose of a formal job application. The reasons about your family’s finances take up considerable space, while your suitability is asserted rather than clearly demonstrated; for example, “I have a great experience” does not explain what skills you gained. The interview timing is also vague, and “I will give an interview to the next week” does not clearly specify availability. Focus more on relevant service skills and give a definite day or time.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The ideas can be followed in a broad sequence: your current work and circumstances, your experience, and your interview availability. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Actually” show an attempt to connect points. However, the response is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the stages of a formal application are not clearly separated. Several ideas are joined in long sentences, particularly the explanation of your family’s expenses, and the repeated statements “I really want this job” and “I hope you will give me a chance” do not advance the letter. Organise the response into short paragraphs for the application, relevant qualifications, and interview availability, and use clearer transitions rather than relying on a few repeated connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the central points, including “salary,” “experience,” “diploma,” and “interview.” There are also attempts to use more specific language about your work history. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making the message difficult to interpret. For example, “I will not disappear you” does not convey a clear promise, and “a labor in a small factory” is not a natural way to describe your father’s occupation. “I humble request” and “salary is little high” also need more appropriate phrasing. Build a set of formal application expressions and service-related vocabulary, and check that each phrase expresses the intended meaning naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine ideas using clauses, as in “Currently I am a teacher in a school, but the salary is very low,” and “I want to educate them that's why I need a job.” This shows some effort beyond short, simple sentences. However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the letter hard to read. Examples include “One of brother and sister are in school,” the unclear construction “I will give an interview to the next week,” and “now the I'm little busy.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention, especially where two ideas are joined without a suitable separator. Practise accurate articles, verb forms, and sentence joining, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and complete structure.
