Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

I am writing to express my interest in the lastest advertisement placed by your hotel in local newspaper for the position of waiters and waitresses. From past 2 years I have been working as a waiter at Taj Hotel, one of the most renowned hotel in India. Recently I have been appointed as the head waiter.

I have completed my management degree from Lovely Professional University and with that I have completed 2 internships of each 21 days at Lily Hotel and now I would love to work at your hotel as it provides great opportunity for me to upgrade my skills and with that i believe my management skills would be a great showcase for your hotel as well.

I would love to work at your hotel and would be available on the following dates for the interview:

1st, 2nd and 5th November

Looking forward to your prompt response.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Yours Sincerely

Paul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you work as a waiter and have recently become head waiter, describe your degree and hotel internships as relevant preparation, and give three possible interview dates. These details make the application relevant and purposeful. However, suitability is not fully developed: the response does not give concrete examples of service skills, such as handling customers, working under pressure, or cooperating with colleagues. The reason for wanting this particular role—“upgrade my skills”—is also more focused on your benefit than on what you can contribute to the restaurant. Add one or two specific strengths and connect them directly to the advertised work to make the application more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information follows a generally sensible order: you introduce the application, give your experience and qualifications, then state your interview availability and close politely. The paragraphs help separate the main stages of the letter, and the reader can follow your purpose throughout. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly the repeated “with that” in the second paragraph, where the relationship between your degree, internships, and management skills is not expressed smoothly. The interview dates would also be clearer in a complete sentence rather than as a standalone list. Use more precise links between each qualification and your suitability, and organise the experience and skills into a focused paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a job application, including “position,” “renowned,” “appointed,” “internships,” and “management skills.” These choices communicate your background and intentions, and the tone is mostly appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural, such as “lastest advertisement,” “in local newspaper,” and “a great showcase for your hotel.” “Upgrade my skills” is understandable but sounds less polished in this context. Check spelling and choose conventional application phrases, while adding precise service-related vocabulary to describe your strengths. This would make the letter sound more professional and show greater control of word choice without changing its clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and longer structures, for example the sentence beginning “I have completed my management degree” and continuing with your internships and reasons for applying. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. “From past 2 years I have been working” needs an article and a more natural time expression, while “one of the most renowned hotel” has a plural agreement error. The sentence beginning “I have completed my management degree” also becomes difficult to control because several ideas are joined together. Use accurate articles and plurals, and divide long sentences when they contain separate points. This will improve accuracy while preserving the range of structures you are attempting.
