IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
To the hiring manager,
I hope you are doing well. I came across the advertisement for a job placed in the newspaper. I am writing this to apply for the waitress position at your restaurant.
I have recently completed my bachelors in fine arts from xyz university. During my degree, I worked part time as a waitress at several restaurants. Now that I've finally graduated, I want to continue working at a restaurant as I've gained enough knowledge of this field. I am particularly good at serving customers with care and respect. Aside from that, I can adapt to any environment and can work under pressure as well. I have a very clear idea of how restaurants work. I think that makes me suitable for this kind of work. Moreover, I have three years of experience. I once got “Employee of the Month” award too. I have attached the certificates of my previous work experiences along with this letter.
I hope to hear from you soon. As for the interview, the coming week works the best for me.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you have recently graduated, describe your restaurant experience and customer-service strengths, and indicate that the coming week suits you for an interview. The “Employee of the Month” award and reference to attached certificates also support your application. These relevant details show more than a basic response, but some points are not fully developed: for example, you do not specify your current situation beyond having graduated, or give particular interview days or times. A more explicit statement of your availability and one concrete example of your work skills would make the application more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a sensible order: the opening states your purpose, the main paragraph presents your background and suitability, and the closing turns to the interview. Linking phrases such as “Aside from that” and “Moreover” help connect supporting details, and the message is easy to follow overall. However, the main paragraph contains several points in a row without much grouping, and some transitions feel formulaic. The closing could also connect more smoothly to the application by making the interview request explicit. Use clearer paragraphing to separate your current situation, relevant experience and availability, and vary linking methods so the progression feels more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of job-application and service-related vocabulary, including “apply for the waitress position,” “serving customers with care and respect,” and “work under pressure.” These choices communicate your experience and strengths clearly. There are also some less precise or less natural expressions: “a job placed in the newspaper” is awkward, “gained enough knowledge of this field” is broad, and “the coming week works the best for me” is not idiomatic. “Bachelors” should be written as “bachelor’s” in this context. Aim for more precise collocations and a slightly more formal register, while keeping the language direct and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “Now that I've finally graduated, I want to continue working at a restaurant” and “I can adapt to any environment and can work under pressure as well.” Most sentences are understandable, and the grammar does not obstruct the message. Some errors and inconsistencies remain: “my bachelors in fine arts” needs the possessive form and appropriate capitalisation, while “I once got ‘Employee of the Month’ award” is missing an article before “award.” The contraction “I've” also sits less comfortably with the otherwise formal application style. Check articles and possessives, and use a consistent level of formality to improve accuracy.
