IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper. Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In the letter
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Respected Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. The purpose of writing this letter is to apply for the position of waitress at your renowned restaurant as advertised in Dawn Newspaper.
I have done intermediate from Punjab Group of Colleges and now I am working as waitress in a MCDONALD'S restaurant. Along with my job, I am also pursuing hospitality management course.
I believe, I am well suited for this area of work as I possess minimum qualification required for the position and I also have relevant work experience of 2 years. Further, the knowledge I can apply gained from hospitality management course makes me a good candidate.
I am applying because your restaurant is one of the prestigious restaurants and working here will give me a great experience. Please note that, I am available for the interview on Monday in the afternoon.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that you work as a waitress while studying hospitality management, give two years of relevant experience, and state that you are available Monday afternoon for an interview. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the details are relevant. However, suitability is only briefly explained: “minimum qualification required” and course knowledge are asserted rather than supported with examples of service skills, such as handling customers or working under pressure. The reason for choosing this restaurant is also general (“one of the prestigious restaurants”). The response already covers the task well, but more specific evidence of your abilities and a clearer explanation of your motivation would make the application more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible sequence: opening and purpose, current work and study, suitability, then motivation and interview availability. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and the closing is appropriate. Linking expressions such as “Along with,” “Further,” and “because” make relationships between ideas clear, though the transitions are somewhat formulaic. The suitability paragraph combines qualifications, experience, and course knowledge without explaining how these connect to the role, so progression could be smoother. A more conventional application-letter structure, including a sign-off, would also make the ending feel complete. Overall, the organisation is clear, with some room to make cohesion more natural and ideas better connected.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for an application, including “position,” “relevant work experience,” “hospitality management,” and “available for the interview.” These choices communicate the main points, and the tone is generally formal. However, some phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “I have done intermediate,” “minimum qualification required,” and “the knowledge I can apply gained.” “Renowned” and “prestigious” also sound overly promotional in this context and do not add specific information. The range is adequate for the task, but collocation and phrasing errors are noticeable. Aim for natural, precise expressions—for example, state your qualification directly and describe concrete service skills rather than relying on broad claims.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentences, including “Along with my job, I am also pursuing…” and the reason clause beginning “because your restaurant…”. The message remains understandable throughout. Some grammatical errors are present, however: “I have done intermediate” is not a natural construction for describing a completed qualification, and “the knowledge I can apply gained from…” has an unclear clause structure. Commas are also misplaced in “I believe, I am…” and “Please note that, I am…”. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your application, but they reduce accuracy. Practise forming clear relative or participial clauses and check punctuation around introductory phrases and conjunctions.
